A40 London Road Corridor Improvements Project
National Productivity Investment Fund

The project seeks to improve journey time reliability and ease congestion on the A40 London Road through the delivery of a range of improvements including junction changes, introduction of new traffic management technology, bus stop improvements and the optimisation of bus lane locations.

Welcome to the sixth information bulletin for the A40 London Road Corridor Improvements Project providing progress and works information on the implementation of the project.

Project Update

Councillor Mark Shaw has given the green light to implementation of the next phase of improvements to the A40 London Road.

Further to public consultation carried out in the Summer which showed overall support for the scheme, important upgrades to key junctions along the A40 London Road will start on Monday, 7th October.

The stretch from Easton Street to Loudwater will include improvements at the Gordon Road, Hatters Lane, Micklefield Road with Ryemead Way and Gomm Road junctions.  The £6.6m package of work also includes changes to bus lanes, the introduction of dedicated turning lanes and improvements to pedestrian crossings and traffic lights.

The first phase of construction, which starts at the Gomm Road junction, builds on the technological improvements already made including new CCTV, variable message boards and queue detection sensors.

When all works are fully completed later next year, it will mean better and more reliable journeys for all who use this key route in and out of the town centre. The design of the scheme is also expected to help improve air quality in this part of the town.

Gomm Road Junction Works

The project is being delivered in a number of stages to reduce the traffic impact and delays on the A40.  This bulletin sets out the first stage of these works at the Gomm Road junction, comprising:
  • Renewal of traffic signal equipment at the A40 junction with Gomm Road and
  • Modifications to the carriageway layout including reconfiguration of the existing bus lane between Gomm Road and Hammersley Lane.
The works will be carried out in two phases; the first phase will be to remove the traffic island at the junction of the A40 and Gomm Road and renew the traffic signal equipment.  The second phase of work will be to remove existing road markings and relocate the existing bus lane onto the opposite side of the A40.
Traffic Management

In order to minimise disruption as well as ensure public and workforce safety three-way temporary traffic signals will be in place for 5 weeks, however they will replicate the existing signal timings to minimise delays.  Works affecting traffic flows – including removal of the traffic island, installation of new ducting and white lining will require the reduction of the number of traffic lanes, however these works will be done at night, between 7pm and 6am to minimise traffic delays, with no loud works after 11pm.  Daytime works will be on the footways only, undertaken between 8am and 4.30pm.

Please be assured that noise levels on the site will kept as low as reasonably possible at all times, but noisy activities may occur at various times throughout the works and we apologise for any inconvenience this may cause. Please also be aware that works of this nature are weather dependent and therefore delays may be incurred, although every effort will be made to ensure any delays are kept to a minimum.

Communications

We will be providing regular project updates through social media and website updates as well as e-bulletins.  We will also keep road users informed of works through static and variable message signs erected on the A40.

Recent Works

As you will have seen from previous bulletins, work has been progressing well over the last 12 months on the introduction of new traffic management technology on the London Road, as well as public transport and pedestrian crossing improvements. Recent works include:
  • Overnight works to complete upgraded signalised pedestrian crossings by refreshing line markings, laying high friction surfacing, and installing traffic detection loops in the carriageway which will allow the crossings to adapt to traffic flows.
  • Refurbishment of the pedestrian crossing on Knaves Beech in Loudwater was carried out in combination with maintenance resurfacing works also completed in this area.

CCTV cameras installed onto new strengthened street light columns to improve safety, monitor traffic flows, and provide information to help manage incidents.
