Sen. John Cornyn becoming one of Trump's most outspoken Twitter defenders from impeachment push

Both Cornyn and Cruz have publicly said in recent days they don't think the transcript or whistleblower memo amounts to an impeachable offense. Cornyn, meanwhile, has been mostly mum on his opinion of the conversation between Trump and Zelinsky, saying "it's possible to find some of the conversation troubling" during a Wednesday conference call with reporters. "I think there's nothing in the conversation that justifies impeachment," he continued.

Texas Republicans admit there’s a problem

The GOP recognizes they can no longer ignore their Democratic opponents and count on coasting to re-election in this previously-reliable red state. "Texodus" has entered their lexicon — a term Democrats coined to describe the subsequent retirements of the state's GOP House members. Many "headwinds" are working against them, most notably shifting demographics and attitudes of suburban voters.

With the fields still taking shape in these races, the surveys are an early sign that these Texas contests could be competitive, in part because of shifting demographics in the state. The GOP-held suburban districts are also among the fastest growing in the country. The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee has a headquarters in Austin, and DCCC Chairwoman Cheri Bustos said at the Texas Tribune Festival recently that the state is “ground zero” in 2020.
