NEWS & EVENTS

Library and Information Science professor Lucy Santos Green (right) is exploring how librarians can help teachers use guided inquiry methods in their classroom. Her findings could boost support for librarians to work side-by-side with classroom teachers and potentially prevent school librarian jobs from being cut. Green has been awarded a $376,000 grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services to support her work.

Research office seeks RISE proposals

The Office of the Vice President for Research is seeking proposals for the 2020 Research Initiative for Summer Engagement, or RISE, grant program. The program began in 2012 and supports faculty at the university's senior and Palmetto College campuses by providing funds for summer research through a competitive application process. Proposals for 2020 RISE projects are due by Dec. 19.

Learn how to do background checks

Human Resources is offering a class for faculty and staff on when a background check of a potential employee is required and how to request one. The process has changed with the PeopleAdmin upgrade. The course will be offered 2–4 p.m. Tuesday (Oct. 8) in Suite 101, 1600 Hampton St.

Melih Calamak, civil and environmental engineering, published "On the Optimum Layout of a Drainage Gallery in Concrete Gravity Dams On Isotropic Foundation" in Environmental and Engineering Geoscience.

Daniella Cook, education, was appointed to the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights advisory committee. Committee members advise the commission about the state of civil rights in their respective states, bringing forth issues that impact communities.

Lynn A. McFarland, business, co-authored “A meta-analysis of gender proportionality effects on job performance” for Group & Organization Management.
