Sibs update September 2019

Young Sibling Group Leader Training
Would you like to run a children’s sibling group but not sure where to start?  Already running a group but getting short of ideas?  Our next training session will take place in Birmingham on 29th November. As a previous attendee told us “This workshop is essential for any professional working with siblings of disabled children - providing practical resources and ideas."  Find out more or book your place here.

Sibling Coverage
There have been some interesting sibling stories online in recent weeks, do catch up on the latest here:
“For the next two years, Bronwyn was constantly in and out of hospital which made it hard for me and Bronwyn to bond as most other sisters do.” Sibling Allana tells her story to SWAN UK
"Sometimes I want to play with him and he doesn't let me"
Here sibling Luca tells a little of what it is like to have a brother with autism. Watch on YouTube

“I’m lonely. Can you help find me a girlfriend?”

Alex’s brother is 47 and has learning disabilities. Many adult siblings will relate to her story of helping him to find a girlfriend.

Siblings and sleep
This month our spotlight mini blog focuses on young siblings and sleep.  Many siblings have disrupted sleep due to their disabled brother or sister's needs.  Thanks to The Sleep Charity for support with this piece.  Next month The Sleep Charity are raising the profile of sleep issues.  We would love to hear from any siblings who would like to share their thoughts on sleep issues.

Would you like to support a sibling group in your area?
Are you an adult sibling of someone with a learning disability and/or autism? Would you like to use your sibling experiences to support others? Our next training day is Saturday 12th October in central London and there are only two spaces remaining.
Facilitating an adult sibling support group is a great way use your personal sibling experiences to support others in similar situations. Being a group facilitator can help you develop new skills as well as tap into skills you already have. It can provide you with opportunities for long-term friendships and mutual support, as well as giving you a chance to reflect on your own journey as a sibling.
“This is an excellent day with practical tools in how to facilitate sibling support groups. I left feeling knowledgeable, motivated and enthusiastic to get started.” – adult sibling participant

A huge thank you to our fundraisers!
Tara Leniston and her siblings braved the clouds and raised a whopping £1000 for Sibs during their charity sky dive last month. Check out the pictures on Twitter From everyone at Sibs and from everyone we support – thank you so much!

Adult sibling day
We are busy looking at planning our next adult sibling day – which we now hope will take place in Spring 2020. We are hoping to hold the event outside of London and will be sending out a poll to find out where adult siblings would like the day to be. We will let you know more on this in the next mailing. In the meantime if you know of a company or organisation which might be keen to sponsor the event, please do get in touch at info@sibs.org.uk
