Working for the good of many is a primary goal in building design, especially when a large community is the client. Listening, learning, and educating with the tools of architecture and design are the most enjoyable things we do. Invaluable input comes from engaging the public in ways that foster new ideas, recall history, and draw out external knowledge that leads to successful design solutions. In general, our involvement in the Arts, public school groups, civic entities, churches, or local non-profit organizations aids our understanding of the needs of those around us and the facilities that support those needs.

The Community Issue highlights a few ways we've recently interfaced with clients and the community. You'll also find opportunities to engage and learn yourselves. Enjoy!
Community Meeting with Bethel Hanberry Elementary School
The students of Bethel Hanberry Elementary School in Blythewood, South Carolina will be receiving a new, replacement school. Following a 2018 bond referendum, CGD was awarded the project and recently hosted a visioning session to dream up what a new school could look like. Loaded with sharpies and sticky notes, the teachers, parents, principal, and facilities management in attendance left comments on inspirational photos and precedent imagery that will help the design team understand exactly what is needed to serve them best. These initial conversations and listening sessions are integral to the design process and ultimately, the success of this building for its students, parents, teachers, and administration.
Rotary Club of Greenville // Camp the Falls
Rotary Club of Greenville launched their new fundraiser, "Camp the Falls" festival, encouraging and educating people about the environment and getting outdoors.

Craig Gaulden Davis sponsored a 'campsite' and enjoyed coloring and playing big jenga with festival goers. The whole day was a great time in support of Rotary and the many non-profits they support.
Rotary Club of Greenville, of which Scott Powell is now President, supports Alexander Elementary School. To kick off the school year they treated the teachers to a Back-to-School Cookout.
Architect of Academic Achievement
Congratulations to Latoi Gibson, this year's 'Architect of Academic Achievement' winner! This CGD sponsored award and plaque recognizes a teacher at Alexander Elementary school for their innovative lesson planning; selection is done by the Principal and Instructional Coach.
Groundbreaking!
A ground breaking ceremony at the new Roper Mountain Science Center (RMSC) Environmental Science building was held on September 5th. CGD architect, Gwinn Harvey, and Lee Skolnick (Lee Skolnick Architecture & Design Partnership) shoveled dirt with Greenville County School Board members, Roper Mountain Science Center Association, Harper General Contractors, and RMSC Staff to show support for this unique facility and announce a capital campaign needed for the environmental exhibits.
