The Disaster Research Center Launches a New Educational Series
Research Recalibrated:
If you don't know it, DRC It!
The dissemination of research-based information in dynamic and accessible ways is an integral part of the Disaster Research Center's mission. To achieve this, DRC researchers collaborate not only with disaster scholars but also with emergency management partners. Holding true to these ideals, DRC is excited to announce our newest educational initiative, DRC It!. DRC It! aims to make disaster research more accessible so that it complements current knowledge. DRC researchers have created four products, which provide an in-depth look at what academic disaster research states about particular topics. Our researchers understand the challenges that emergency managers face each day and hope DRC It! can help address some of those challenges with evidence-based information.

DRC It! Products
In order to make the existing research more accessible, DRC researchers consolidate numerous studies for each identified topic into four easy to access products.
- A short, animated video
- A topic summary that highlights the most important and consistent findings
- A theme summary that provides more detail on research findings
- A full bibliography of all literature that was used to create the other products
This set of products allows the user to obtain the level of detail that best fits their needs. You can find all of the DRC It! products on our website: drc.udel.edu/research/drcit.
The Development Process
Great time and consideration go into the creation of these products. Topic selection is based on the needs expressed by our partners in the emergency management field and the broader community. Once a topic is selected, DRC researchers search for relevant materials such as peer-reviewed published journal articles, Ph.D. dissertations, master theses, and scholarly books. The materials are read, not once but multiple times, to synthesize the findings. When looking across the literature, researchers identify themes and reorganize the findings based on the identified themes. At this point in the process, researchers write the theme summary and further consolidate the information into a shorter topic summary. Lastly, researchers work with DRC's media partner Ninja Tropic to bring the findings to life in a short, animated video. Voila! The four products!

DRC is launching DRC It! with a topic that puzzles people each hurricane season, The Hurricane Evacuation Decision Making Process. Understanding the reasons why individuals do or do not evacuate during a hurricane is a complex issue that researchers have been studying for years. Check it out!
