ARC Team is Growing: Naomi Hossain is joining American University's School of International Service as a Research Professor at the Accountability Research Center.
Naomi Hossain is a political sociologist, trained in philosophy, politics, economics, anthropology and international development. She is interested in how people living with poverty and without power hold public authorities to account, in particular the ‘rude’ forms of accountability that citizens use to claim rights where states are weak or captured. She has studied elite perceptions of poverty and inequality, the politics of education, food security, and social protection, and women’s empowerment in collaborative and comparative work with partners in 20 countries around the world. In her working career she has moved between BRAC in Bangladesh and the Institute of Development Studies at the University of Sussex, working closely with scholars, activists, NGOs, governments and donor agencies. Naomi has written two books about the politics of development in Bangladesh (Elite Perceptions of Poverty in Bangladesh (2005) and The Aid Lab (2017), co-edited three others about economic and food crises and the politics of education reform, and published on politics, civil society, and social movements in relation to the development process. Grant Renewal: Open Society Foundations (OSF) have renewed a grant to ARC to support a new project
ARC’s new project supported by a $300,000 grant from OSF will support southern-based independent monitoring and advocacy to strengthen Citizen Engagement (CE) in World Bank operations. Through this pilot initiative, ARC will partner with southern-based organizations doing independent monitoring of World Bank project commitments involving citizen engagement. ARC may provide modest seed funding and tailored technical support for locally based, bottom-up CE monitoring in their home countries.
The pilot initiative will contribute to:
- Strengthening partners’ advocacy with government and the World Bank on citizen engagement;
- Generating lessons learned from experience across partners about how to build monitoring capacity, and
- Identifying weaknesses in World Bank CE implementation that warrant policy dialogue and more intensive monitoring.
The grant period will begin Oct 1, 2019 and last through March 31, 2020. Stay tuned for more details as the project gets underway. Conference: COPASAH Global Symposium Oct 15-18, 2019
From October 15-18, the COPASAH Global Symposium 2019 on Citizenship, Governance and Accountability in Health will be held in New Delhi, India. The theme of this year's meeting is Leaving No One Behind: Strengthening Community Centred Health Systems for Achieving Sustainable Development Goals. It will bring together 500 practitioners from diverse social – cultural contexts including COPASAH members from Latin America, Eastern Europe, Sub Saharan African, Eastern and Southern Asia along with researchers, programme managers, donors and policy makers in the field of public health governance.
The Symposium is being organised by COPASAH in collaboration with several global and Indian partners including the People's Health Movement, Azim Premji University – Bengaluru (India), Accountability Research Center – American University - Washington DC (USA), Institute of Development Studies – Sussex (UK), Global Health Justice and Governance Programme – Mailman School of Public Health, Columbia University New York (USA).
