Better bikeways, trails, walkable cities, vibrant public places

Together we make great things happen.  Friday was a wonderful celebration.  So joyful and so great to see support from the community.  Thank you!

Also on Friday - the Governor signed an Executive Order to redouble efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and mitigate the impacts of climate change while building a sustainable, inclusive economy.  People and businesses in the State of California have made great progress, but there is extreme urgency for action in the next ten years.  The Governor outlines steps the state will be making together with the people of California.

Read the Executive Order
While we don't often talk about it, Shasta Living Streets programs for better bikeways, walkable cities, and vibrant public places work to directly accelerate the transition to a low-carbon world, holding off the worst effects of climate change.

There are many benefits to building active-living excellence - strengthening our local economy, improving individual health, enabling civic engagement, lowering cost of living.  Also - Empowering people to live a car-lite, active lifestyle is one of the most important climate actions we can take together in the next ten years.
  • Pollution from transportation contributes the largest share of emissions that cause climate change
  • 46% of car trips in the United States are three-miles or less
  • These are trips people once took by foot or two-wheels
  • Pedal-assist bikes now allow people of all ages & abilities to comfortably ride 2-10 miles, smiling and enjoying the trip
By connecting our homes and neighborhoods with transit that works, a network of comfortable, trail-like routes (out of traffic), and supportive amenities like safe bike parking, we empower people to dramatically reduce fuel consumption.

California's policies and action are driven by the worlds most progressive climate legislation, brought by a Republican governor more than ten years ago, approved twice by the people of California.  Major shifts are happening faster than people realize and results are showing, but transportation pollution is our biggest challenge and we must be bolder.

The great news:  With the projects already scoped and funded, our region is poised to be a model for smart growth and transit and trail-oriented development for non-coastal cities in California, if we continue to move forward and shape our future to raise our community into the ranks of top cities for active and healthy living.

Thank you for supporting and being a part of the movement!  It's an exciting time.  Please contact me if you would like to be involved.

Best,
Anne Thomas, Executive Director
