Dear Friends of Yu Ming,

We are delighted to announce that Yu Ming Charter School was just recognized as a 2019 U.S. National Blue Ribbon School by the Department of Education!

The National Blue Ribbon award is given to schools throughout the nation that demonstrate “what is possible when committed educators hold all students and staff to high standards and create vibrant, innovative, cultures of teaching and learning.” Only 362 schools in the country received the Blue Ribbon award this year. Among those, Yu Ming is one of 30 schools in California to be recognized, and one of only a handful of immersion schools to ever receive the award. You can learn more about the award here.

“Yu Ming” means “Education for a Bright Future” in Mandarin, and we are proud to be an Oakland grown, Alameda County authorized public charter school that is preparing the next generation of global citizens and leaders. Whether guiding students through in depth collaborative projects, leading content-rich language immersion lessons, or facilitating social-emotional circle practices, our incredible teachers and staff work tirelessly to ensure every Yu Ming scholar is known and supported - and succeeds on every measure.

As an “Exemplary High Performing School” we are so proud of our students who work hard to achieve at the highest levels. Our Yu Ming scholars have inverted the achievement gap; our economically disadvantaged students and special education students outperform non-economically disadvantaged students and general education students across the state. We believe that our diverse, multi-lingual, compassionate, and connected community is key to our success.
