From 23 to 25 August, Europatat travelled to the Polish region of Warmia-Masuria to attend the 2019 edition of Potato Poland, the Polish international exhibition dedicated to the whole potato chain. Genome editing in biotech innovation
Europatat was one of the limited guests to a lunch organised by EuropaBio at the European Parliament, hosted by MEPs Henna Virkkunen and Anthea McIntyre, to discuss how can biotechnology help tackling challenges such as climate change, depletion of natural resources, or developing beneficial and resistant crops and plants on the road to 2030. Inclusive dialogue around research ethics in this area, what stands in the path of world leading EU scientific breakthrough, and how can a biotech ecosystem that prioritises people and planet be fostered, were some of the interesting questions addressed during the event.

Brexit preparedness – Europatat takes action!
Europatat has recently participated at the last meeting of the Advisory Group on the Food Chain and Animal and Plant Health in relation to the withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the EU, in the presence of Member State’s representatives and stakeholders. Given the fact that a number of scenarios are still possible, but that the possibility of a no-deal scenario remains, Europatat continues to advice its members to keep advancing with preparedness for all eventualities. Check our last Activity Report to find out what Europatat has done in terms of Brexit preparedness during the last year.
Potatoes & innovation, a great combination!
On 24 September, Europatat attended the first day of the European Research and Innovation Days in Brussels. The event gathered Europe’s best researchers, scientists, innovators and policy makers to debate and shape the future research and innovation EU landscape. The need for making our planet healthy again was emphasized in a lot of sessions of the programme, confirming how innovation and digitalisation can offer a huge advantage for companies in the food supply chain. In 2020, the Europatat Congress will explore the possibilities and barriers to successfully make the most of digitalisation in the potato sector. Stay tuned for more information!
