Oh, hi friends!

I was having a particularly horrible day earlier this week, and nothing seemed to be going right. I literally could not function. (My computer wasn’t working either, so in this case literally means literally.) My brain felt too full of all the wrong things: wrong ideas, wrong priorities, wrong emotions.

After a sizable amount of moping, I suddenly asked myself, “But what is something big that I can do right now?”

Actually, the real question was more of a scream that said, “JUST SHUT UP AND DO SOMETHING — ANYTHING — ELSE.”

So I impulsively sent off two emails about two VERY big projects that have been swimming around my head for a year.

It doesn’t matter what the responses were. What matters is the feeling I had right after taking action: Oh yes, I actually *do* have control over my life.

Maybe you also need to send off a wild email.
Maybe you need to word vomit an idea to someone.
Maybe you need to admit to yourself — out loud — what you really want.
Or maybe you need a snack and a nap.

OR, maybe it’s all good and you haven’t had a garbage week! But if you did, I want you to have the same feeling that I had.

And it starts by remembering that you do have control.

Alrighty, speaking of very big projects, I've got one! And it’s happening on Saturday. Oh gosh, that’s tomorrow?!

This summer, I collaborated with the composer Joshua Cerdenia on a new, 20-minute musical called “The Eyes of Vienna.” I’ve mentioned it here before (it’s been on my mind!); set in 1880 Vienna, it takes place during a meeting between Sisi, the Empress of Austria, and Hans Makart, a painter who was once extremely famous (who is now extremely…not). We have two amazing actors, Krystal Sobaskie and Carl Zurhorst, bringing this story to life.

We’re having a concert reading at 2pm on Saturday, 9/28 at the Bruno Walter Auditorium at Lincoln Center. It’s a just-show-up affair, no tickets needed. We’re one of eight (!) musicals performing that day; composers, lyricists, librettists, and actors banded together during the New York Public Library’s annual “Across a Crowded Room” series for emerging musical theater writers. It’ll be a great day with shows from 11am-1pm and 2pm-4pm.

That’s a long way of saying: I would love to see you there if you’re able to come!

And I would also like to thank every person who reads this newsletter — whether we’ve personally emailed or not — because I find great joy and motivation in being digitally surrounded by so many people who are also reaching, reaching, reaching for their dreams.

I’ll keep going for mine if you keep going for yours.

Thank you.
