VOTE Housing on October 21

Ottawa's next federal election is on October 21. Decisions made by the government affect our every day lives.

Our federal government provides funding for important services like affordable housing and transit

They set the standards that shape the country and can take steps to reduce poverty, increase quality of life, and tackle the climate crisis.
Most important, the federal government is accountable to every citizen. Leading up to the federal election, listen to what each party is saying about affordable housing and other issues you care about.

To vote in the federal election, you must:
• be a Canadian citizen
• be at least 18 years old on election day
• prove your identity and address

There are many ways to prove your identity and address, no matter what type of identification you have. You can vote using just a driver’s license or with a combination of identification such as a utility bill and a student card.

If you don’t have any ID or a permanent address, you can still vote! A friend or neighbour can vouch for you.
Voting is an important way to make your voice heard! If you need any accessibility accommodations to vote or have questions about voting, please contact Elections Canada at 1-800-463-6868.

More information on voting, including a full list of accepted proof of identification can be found at elections.ca.

Halloween in CCOC Buildings

CCOC has decorations to lend to tenants interested in decorating their building's lobby. We also have some funds for tenant gatherings to celebrate seasonal events.

Getting Ready for Winter

Turning on the heat

CCOC turns the heat on in late September/ early October. In the larger buildings, it can take a few days for the boiler system to build up enough heat to start distributing it to each of the apartments.

Locking up the roof decks

For safety reasons, CCOC locks the doors to the roof decks the last week of October. The roof decks will re-open in the spring once all of the snow and ice have melted.

Turning off outdoor taps

If you have an outdoor tap, shut off the water to the outside tap from the pipe shut-off inside, then drain the line by turning on the outside tap.

CCOC has Pride!

On August 25, CCOC marched in the Pride Parade and celebrated with our community! We wanted to let our tenants and the Ottawa community know we are proud to be an inclusive landlord. We also wanted to honour the history of our staff, tenants, and volunteers who have always ensured that CCOC is a landlord for everyone.

Keep your eyes on the CCOC blog and social media to learn more about these stories.

Welcome our new staff

Olu Ademeso joins CCOC as our newest General. He has a wealth of experience working in property management for 13 years internationally. Olu is excited to be a part of a diverse organization that values sustainability. He's excited to learn more about non-profits and affordable housing. Welcome, Olu!

Thanks, Preston Hardware!

CCOC gives each new tenant a Welcome Kit when they move in. The kits include a recycling bag, toilet plunger, toilet paper, baking soda for green cleaning, and lots of information to help tenants go green and to find their way around their new neighbourhood.

Preston Hardware generously sponsors these welcome kits by donating free plungers to CCOC.

Preston Hardware, located at 248 Preston Street, has been in business since 1945. It is one of the main suppliers for CCOC's Facilities Management Department, and is within walking and cycling distance or a short bus ride for the majority of CCOC tenants. They are open Monday through Saturday.
