Hello and welcome to Shrubland Nurseries latest Newsletter!

Autumn is here and there's still plenty to enjoy and do in the garden. It is the perfect time to reorganise borders and plant perennials, shrubs and bulbs for next year. Plants respond well to being moved or planted now as the soil is still warm and depending on where you are, hopefully you've had a little rain.

If you still need your plant fix over the winter months why not consider a few Houseplants? Recent studies have shown just how useful plants are at helping to remove pollutants from the air inside our homes and increase our feelings of wellbeing. They may be the 'in thing' right now but we have been growing tender and indoor plants since we started our Nursery in 1999 so if you're at all unsure about what to grow where or maybe have some houseplant problems just get in touch we will be very happy to help!

We have 2 great offers this month. For every 5 plants or packs of bulbs you purchase you get the lowest priced one for FREE. Ends 17th October

FREE DELIVERY on all orders of £25 or more
(UK only) 18th to 31st October
Cane Begonias such as this Begonia albopicta rosea are fantastic house plants. You don't even need a sunny windowsill they are perfectly happy on a shelf or table away from direct sun. The curious bamboo-like stems carry leaves which are often marked or spotted, and have the lop-sided shape characteristic of Begonias. The flowers hang in pendulous clusters and they are evergreen giving year round interest.

The 'Happy Bean' plant Peperomia ferreyrae is an easy to grow houseplant with thick stems and whorls of succulent green leaves which are shaped like bean pods (it's not actually edible).  It lives on the floor of tropical forests in Peru and so appreciates shade from direct sun. If you love succulents but don't have enough sunny windowsills this is the one for you!  A kitchen or bathroom would be ideal but really anywhere with good light but away from hot sun will be fine.

Set your winter garden ablaze with this dogwood, Cornus sanguinea 'Anny's Winter Orange'. The colours develop as the weather gets colder - from the base the stems are yellow, moving upwards through orange to red at the top. The leaves mirror these colour changes in autumn too before they drop. Dogwoods are such tough, hardy shrubs tolerating all soil types including heavy wet clay.
For late season colour Michaelmas Daisies are hard to beat! These cheerful daisies really give borders a much needed injection of colour at this time of year. We love this little dwarf variety Aster 'Small Ness'. It is ideal for the front of the border or a raised bed or even in pots. The Bees are very grateful for nectar-rich plants as they build up their stores for winter. It is resistant to mildew too so what's not to love!?
FREE DELIVERY on orders £25 and over between 18th-31st October (UK only)
Now then here's a succulent which stands up to attention. Cotyledon undulata or Silver Crown, or Silver Ruffles as it's commonly known and you can see why. This is a great plant for a sunny windowsill and doesn't like to be over watered so is well suited to those of us who might be, shall we say, a little neglectful of our houseplants
This year we welcomed back and old favourite to our range. Chrysanthemum Mary Stoker is a brilliant hardy Chrysanth. The peachy-apricot flowers just look so stunning in the autumn sunshine. The colour would probably be washed out by harsh summer sun. It looks superb with Ornamental Grasses and other late flowering perennials.
It's time to plan your spring displays and plant Spring Bulbs now. If your borders aren't ready you can grow bulbs in pots to great effect. We are often asked which bulbs can be grown in pots and the simple answer is any of them! Just remember to plant them out in the garden after they have finished flowering as they will do better there in the long term. Many bulbs are suitable for naturalising in a wild flower meadow or even just an area of lawn. Some are ideal for planting beneath deciduous shrubs or trees to give you a flush of early colour before the leaves come out creating too much shade. You can use our Refine Search feature on the left hand side on our website to tailor our range of bulbs to suit your requirements

Happy Gardening!
