Worship Forecast
This week, Pastor Cheryl’s sermon titled, “The Treasure of a Good Foundation" is based on scripture in 1 Timothy 6:6-19, a pastoral letter in which the writer makes it clear that “the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil.”  We will explore how it is possible to live as a sacrificial, neighbor-loving Christian in a society where lavish spending on oneself is glamorized. We’ll imagine together how “God … richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment” so that we may store up for ourselves “the treasure of a good foundation for the future” of our precious church, trusting in God rather than “uncertainty of riches.” All are welcome and heartily encouraged to invite others!

1 TIMOTHY 6: 6-19

Of course, there is great gain in godliness combined with contentment; for we brought nothing into the world, so that[a] we can take nothing out of it; but if we have food and clothing, we will be content with these. But those who want to be rich fall into temptation and are trapped by many senseless and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. 10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, and in their eagerness to be rich some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pains.

The Good Fight of Faith

11 But as for you, man of God, shun all this; pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance, gentleness. 12 Fight the good fight of the faith; take hold of the eternal life, to which you were called and for which you made[b] the good confession in the presence of many witnesses. 13 In the presence of God, who gives life to all things, and of Christ Jesus, who in his testimony before Pontius Pilate made the good confession, I charge you 14 to keep the commandment without spot or blame until the manifestation of our Lord Jesus Christ, 15 which he will bring about at the right time—he who is the blessed and only Sovereign, the King of kings and Lord of lords. 16 It is he alone who has immortality and dwells in unapproachable light, whom no one has ever seen or can see; to him be honor and eternal dominion. Amen.

17 As for those who in the present age are rich, command them not to be haughty, or to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but rather on God who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. 18 They are to do good, to be rich in good works, generous, and ready to share, 19 thus storing up for themselves the treasure of a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of the life that really is life.

Monday Morning Quarterback
with weekly devotion
Bible Study Questions to continue studying the scripture from this week’s service at home. If you need a Bible, Pastor Cheryl will be pleased to provide one to you.

Read 1 Timothy 6:6-19
·         “The love of money is the root of all kinds of evil.” (v.10) What does this mean to you?
·         The scripture describes that in an “eagerness to be rich some have wandered away from the faith.” (v.10) Think of an example of someone putting their wallet above their faith. What reasoning would they give to defend their position? Think of an example of what feels like a valid reason to put wealth above faith. Would Jesus accept that reason if there were poor needing food and clothing? Where is the line?
·         “God ..richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment” to store up the treasure of a good foundation for the future. (v. 19) What does this good foundation look like for our church? How can we trust God to provide what we need?

Devotion: Grateful am I. Gifted am I. Grounded am I.
UMW Dinner:

Meet Dr. Belinda Forbes

Kindness

Kindness is defined as loaning someone your strength instead of reminding them of their weakness. What a lovely, deeply Christian sentiment. To me, this exemplifies the Golden Rule, “Do to others as you would have them do to you.” Luke 6:31 The definition intertwines me with you, your fate with mine, my responsibility for you with my responsibility for myself. It compels me to build you up, to encourage you and never break you down with words or actions that would leave you feeling yourself to be anything less than the glorious creation of our loving God. It reminds me of those ants that create a flotilla in a flood, using their own bodies to support the entire colony until they arrive at safety. These words, “build up” and “support” demonstrate what Wesley UMC is all about, a community of Christians seeking to grow with God and go with God, supporting one another in our shared mission to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.

Be kind.

Pastor Cheryl

PRE-CONFERENCE BRIEFING
THIS SUNDAY AT 11:45 AM
to consider
ENDOWMENT AND TRUSTEES RECOMMENDATIONS

Proposals for 2019 Annual Church Conference

There are two proposals that will come before the church conference on October 22, 2019 at 7:00 pm. We are providing the following written recommendations from the Endowment Committee and Trustees so that members may be fully informed prior to the vote. We have also scheduled a pre-conference briefing on September 29, 2019 following worship at 11:45 am to encourage thoughtful discussion in an atmosphere of Christian fellowship.

Endowment Committee Proposal re: Janet Reynolds’ Gift to Wesley

Long-time member, Janet Reynolds, remembered Wesley United Methodist Church in her will gifting the church $125,436 without restriction.  Historically, gifts of this size have been invested in our endowment fund managed by the United Methodist Foundation of New England.  That fund consists of one account with restricted funds and one with unrestricted funds.  The Foundation has professional financial advisors who are guided in socially responsible investing as defined by the Social Principles of the United Methodist Church. Wesley then receives 3.75-4.75% of the total, depending on the draw we have elected, as annual income that helps fund our budget.  This money comes to us in quarterly payments.

The Endowment Committee recommends fully investing the $125,436 in our unrestricted fund at the UMFNE.  This will allow the money to grow in a socially responsible way and give us a sustainable, reliable source of income for years to come.

Trustee Proposal re: Capital Improvements

The Trustees “have the supervision, oversight, and care of all real property owned by the church and of all property and equipment” (BOD ¶2533) and are required to maintain them in safe and habitable condition. Wesley currently has about $45,000 remaining from the proceeds of the sale of the Trinity Street parsonage per Treasurer, Dawn Haynes which “may be used for capital improvements beyond the regular operating budget when written approval is granted by the district superintendent and pastor.” (BOD ¶2543)

The Trustees recommend using the balance of the Trinity Fund to 1) remodel the upstairs parsonage bathroom to re-mediate black mold and bring it into line with other improvements at a cost of $17,122.80; 2) replace the unsafe and energy inefficient windows and front door in the parsonage at a cost of $13,472.05 and 3) replace two rotting fire doors at the back of Hanna Hall at a cost of $10,610, also withdrawing the small remaining balance of the fund (about $4000) and placing it in an accessible reserve fund for anticipated capital projects.

Black mold is present in the floor and behind the upstairs parsonage shower walls and is a health hazard in violation of the current Parsonage Guidelines provided by the New England Annual Conference and endorsed by the Conference Board of Trustees and the Equitable Compensation Commission in 2011.

The fourteen parsonage windows and door are extremely inefficient, very old, first generation replacements that have screwed on screens and daylight can be seen between the window frames and the walls, that when leaned on, could cause you to fall out.  The front door is falling apart and can only be closed successfully by using the deadbolt lock.

The two Hanna Hall fire doors with side windows are very inefficient, unsightly, are rotting and are a fire hazard. They can no longer be fixed correctly.

     1. Parsonage 2nd Floor Bathroom Remodel                     $17,122.80

     2. Parsonage Windows & Front Door Replacement          13,472.05

     3. Church Hanna Hall 2 Rotting Doors Replacement        10,610.00

                                                 Total                         $41,204.85

If you have any questions or requests for additional information, please email or call the office so that we can prepare that for you in advance of the preconference briefing. concordwumc@gmail.com or 224-7413.

PRAYER MESSENGERS
The Prayer Messengers gather in the Chapel each Sunday at 10:00 AM to pray together for Wesley Church, its pastor, its people and special concerns through INTERCESSORY PRAYER- a prayer to God on behalf of others. Jesus prayed for others and taught his disciples the Lord's Prayer. When we pray to God, we are not simply saying, "God, remove all these problems and make everything easy. Snap your cosmic fingers and make it all better." Following a short devotion, we pray to God, consciously thanking God for our blessings and inviting God into our struggles. You are welcome anytime during this prayer time. In this way we empower ourselves to fulfill our mission in the world. Paul instructed in Ephesians 6:18, "Pray in the spirit at all times and on every occasion. Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers for all believers everywhere."
