Rosh Hashana Classroom Works

As mentioned above, the children learned that on Rosh Hashana we ask Hashem to make us like the head of a fish and not the tail. We strive to make good choices with our heads. Elianna enjoyed pairing the heads and tails of various animals to help better explain this concept.

Nava, Ellie, Joseph, Jacob, Benjamin and Eliyahu sequence picture cards displaying how bees produce honey.
|
|
- Left: Noa and Arielle contrast Macintosh, Spartan, Golden Russet, Red Delicious, and Golden Delicious apples.
- Right: Eden counts the number of bees on each card and covers the correct amount with a flower.

After learning that we eat apples dipped in sweet honey on Rosh Hashana, the toddlers dipped apples and honey combs into paint to design their very own plates. They look forward to using these plates at their Yom Tov meals to hold their apples and honey.

The Ba’al Tokea at the Jewish Center, Mr. Ed Morgan, visited Gan Aliya and blew the shofar for us. Mr. Morgan taught for 27 years at the Bronx High School of Science as the Director of bands, chorus, orchestra, and music. He also taught piano and music theory at Yeshiva University Belz School of Jewish Music. He is a former freelance trumpet player. Thank you, Mr. Morgan, for your visit!

On the first night of Rosh Hashana, we bentch one another, "may you be inscribed and sealed for a good year." The children started to learn the gender specific ways to wish males and females this blessing: "l'shana tova tikasev v'saichaseim" to a boy, and "l'shana tova tikasevi v'saichaseimi" to a girl. They are looking forward to receiving and giving this special bracha.

A. (Tune to: I'm a Little Teapot)
I’m a little honey bee, just watch me work
Here is a flower, its nectar I slurp
Into my tummy the nectar stops
It turns into honey, believe it or not!
Back to the hive, over grassy towers
I do a little dance showing where to find more flowers
Inside the hive are rows of waxy cubbies
These are the rooms into which we put our honey
Rosh Hashana’s coming,
The beekeeper is near
We eat honey, for a sweet New Year!
(Primary Only)
B.
Dip the apple in the honey
Make a Bracha loud and clear
L'Shana Tova U'mesuka
Have a happy, sweet, new year
(Toddler and Primary)
C.
Blow the shofar
Blow, blow, blow
Blow, blow, blow
Blow, blow, blow
Blow the shofar
Blow, blow, blow
On Rosh Hashana
(Toddler and Primary)
D.
I am a little shofar and this is what I say
Everybody wake up and do Teshuva right away
Tekiya- toooo
Shevarim- too, too, too
Teruah- to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to
Do Teshuva right away
(Primary Only)
E. (Tune to: Skip to my Lou)
I want to be like the head of a fish
I want to be like the head of a fish
I want to be like the head of a fish
And not the wiggly tail!
(Toddler and Primary)
E. (Tune to: The Wheels on the Bus)
The shofar in the shul goes toot, toot, toot
Toot, toot, toot
Toot, toot, toot
The shofar in the shul goes toot, toot, toot
On Rosh Hashana
The people in the shul daven all day, daven all day, daven all day
The people in the shul daven all day
On Rosh Hashana
The apple on the plate goes in the honey, in the honey, in the honey
The apple on the plate goes in the honey
On Rosh Hashana
(Toddler Only) |
