What is a Co-op you ask?

Co-ops are a great place to shop for fresh, delicious, local food. But they're much more than that. Co-ops are owned by the people that shop there and owners have a say in the co-op's business decisions. This democratic approach is just one of the many ways food co-ops are making the world a better place.

A Cooperative is an organization owned by many stakeholders, rather than one person or family. There are Farming Co-ops (like Pachamama or Organic Valley), Employee Co-ops (like Equal Exchange or Bobs Red Mill), Credit Unions (like Yolo Federal Credit Union or USE), and Retail Co-ops (like REI and your own DFC).

Meet your Farmers: The story behind Pachamama Coffee Cooperative

This month we had the opportunity to meet and interview some of the farmers who own Pachamama Coffee Cooperative, Merling Preza, President, and Carlos Reynoso, Vice President.
Pachamama is the only coffee roaster in the United States that is 100% owned and governed by thousands of family farmers around the world. By farmers, for farmers.

Board Blog: Happy Coop month!

October, Co-op Month, is used across the US as a launching pad for promoting and educating people about the cooperative business model.

Cooperatives are used in many different ways, in many types of industries, and all share in common that they are member-owned and democratically controlled. Cooperatives offer a structure that people use to accomplish together what they may not be able to do one their own.
