State Archives Offers “Preserving Your Family Collections” Program at North Dakota Heritage Center & State Museum

BISMARCK, N.D. – The public is invited to “Preserving Your Family Collections” on Tuesday, Oct. 15, 1:30-2:30 p.m. The program will be held in the Legislative Assembly Room of the State Archives at the North Dakota Heritage Center & State Museum. The event is free and registration is limited. Register by Oct. 7 at preserving-family-collection.eventbrite.com.

Archives Specialist Emily Ergen and Head of Technical Services Stephanie Baltzer Kom will present strategies for organizing family collections – including photographs, letters, certificates, audio and video recordings, documents, and books – and making items easy to find and share. The discussion will include: methods to ensure that important items are preserved; recommended archival storage supplies; advantages to various indexing techniques; and weighing the pros and cons of scanning.
 
This program is offered in honor of American Archives Month. American Archives Month was established by the Society of American Archivists in 2006 to increase public awareness of the importance of archives and preserving historic documents and records.
 
The State Archives is a division of the State Historical Society of North Dakota and is located in the North Dakota Heritage Center & State Museum in Bismarck. The State Archives is open 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and the second Saturday of each month, 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m. The North Dakota Heritage Center & State Museum is open 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday and Saturday-Sunday 10 a.m.-5 p.m. For more information, visit history.nd.gov/archives.
