MGB Register Weekend

This year saw the MGB register off to Ufford park, Woodbridge, to explore the county of Suffolk. The weekend kicked off on Friday afternoon with the registration of the 25 cars attending and dinner.  George Wilder gave an overview on what we could expect from our weekend visit.

Saturday morning and the Weather gods were with us, so with the roof down we set off on our 90 mile route. First to Lavenham, one of England best preserved medieval towns then through the pretty villages of Kersey and Hadleigh on to Flatford mills, immortalized in the paintings of John Constable. During Saturday’s dinner a raffle raised £220 towards the Marathon car.

Sunday’s route commenced with a short drive to Bentwaters Cold war museum. Based on a decommissioned USAF base it consists of a large concrete bunker containing the operations room, Battle cabin and exhibitions on the history of the base. There are also static displays of Phantom, Harrier and Warthog jets. Outside the museum, alongside our MG’s, enthusiasts had gathered with a display of American and British cars.

From here it was another short drive to Snape Maltings, a renowned land mark in Suffolk with its eclectic collection of shops, galleries and cafes. Our route continued to Aldeburgh and our first sight of the sea and a chance to stretch ones legs. From Aldeburgh the route book took us on to Sutton Hoo famous for the discovery of an undisturbed Anglo Saxon ships burial. Leaving Sutton Hoo mid-afternoon it was a short ride back to the Hotel.

Overall a fantastic and looking forward to 2020 and the Scottish borders.

Roger Cooper missed out on the weekend but sent us this note.

Because Joan had only just had her knee op a few days before the Social Weekend and could not travel, UAE57N is a very sad little MGB at the moment as it did not get the chance to go to Woodbridge to meet and chat to all its friends. It is resting grumpily in the garage all cleaned up and ready to go and, in its present condition running extremely well for an oldie,  would have made very light work of the trip from Market Harborough to Suffolk and back.

As a small consolation Thomas and Ulrike Becks paid us a visit after the Weekend so the two B’s (Thomas’s Roadster and our GT) managed a chat through the garage door in a mixture of pidgin German and pidgin English.

Now John Watson has told us that Scotland is the destination for next year’s jolly, UAE57N is wondering if these two old codgers will have the stamina to drive it all that way and back – the B is willing but the drivers are rather uncertain at present.

Can anyone help Harry find some history on his car?

‘My car is a 1977, spent 19 years in the USA, before being first registered in the UK, on the 19/02/1996, I acquired the vehicle on the 20/07/2017, The car has currently got 6,500 miles,
I'm trying to find out if this is the original mileage, contacted the DVLA and it only went back to the last 4 MOTs, any information at all will be very grateful. Regards, Harry’

This car is a very early MGB Register Member – Number 30.
Charles and his father are trying to trace this car which belonged to Charles’s grandfather. They think he registered it with the club in the very early days of the MGB Register. Unfortunately we have no contact details for the current owner. It is still listed by the DVLA and Charles would be delighted to be reunited with the car.

If you have any information about one of these cars please contact Andrew Vigor, MGB Registrar: registrar@mgb-register.org

Marathon MGB

The Marathon MGB was on the BWRDC (British Women’s Rally Drivers Club) stand at Rally Day Castle Coombe on Saturday 21st September and created a lot of interest.
Jean Denton was a founder member of this club.

The picture shows new Cibie grills on the lower lambs and the high spot light, these were donated by Ted Taylor.
