WORKSHOPS AT SAALM'S SEMMES STUDIO

SAALM is rolling out two new workshops for the fall. SPIRIT ANIMALS is part of Museum Month activities and fits in well with the City's Dia de los Muertos + Halloween Events. Taught by Leslie Newton and Lyn Belisle, the two-part hand-building workshop is perfect for beginners as well as artists who wish to explore clay and mixed media. Limit 10.  More information and registration - limit 10 . . .

Susie Monday and Linda Cuellar are offering an Artist Statement Writing Workshop at the Semmes Studio on Saturday, November 9th from 10-3.
ABOUT THE WORKSHOP: SUSIE MONDAY AND LINDA CUELLAR
Susie and Linda say: "We help guide the participants with oral and written exercises exploring the joy and meaning that each artist finds in their art and art making.  We do this individually and in pairs (working with a partner) responding to writing and interview prompts and also using recording technologies readily available on smart phones." Limit 10.

CURRENT EXHIBITION: ARTIST OF THE YEAR JANE DUNNEWOLD

Jane's exhibit continues to be a huge success from the standpoint of both attendance and sales. A collaborative event, the two-day Fiber Art PopUp Shop, brought dozens of visitors to the Art League during the weekend of September 21 and 22 to see the work of the Fiber Artists of San Antonio.

As part of the Fiber Art weekend event, Jane Dunnewold gave an informal talk about her work and her processes. She is the author of a number of books on fiber art, surface design and creativity.

Don't miss this groundbreaking exhibition. It will be available for viewing until October 27th at the San Antonio Art League & Museum, 130 King William Street.
For more on Jane Dunnewold, visit her website.
UPCOMING EXHIBITIONS
We're excited about another collaborative exhibit - TEXAS CLAY: 20/20 VISION.

The Call for Entries is open now for SAALM artists to submit digital entries of their 20x20" wall-hung pieces expressing the nature of clay as a metaphor or material.

Artists from the San Antonio Potters Guild will submit separate digital entries of  3-dimensional claywork that is no larger than 20" in any dimension. 40 wall pieces from the Art League and 40 clay pieces from the Potters Guild will comprise the body of the show which opens at the Art League on Sunday, January 12th. Paula Owen, President of the Southwest School of Art, will serve as juror.

OPENING ON NOVEMBER 3RD

SAALM's traditional Invitational
show features work by outstanding artists with a strong body of work. This year, Yvette Shadrock and Carmen Cartiness Johnson will be featured in a two-person exhibit which will remain on view at the Art League until December 16th.

Ms. Johnson participated in the San Antonio Tricentennial Celebration and has a commissioned work in the Freeman Coliseum and several pieces in University Health Systems of San Antonio downtown facility.  In 2011 eighteen pieces of her work was exhibited at  Charles A. Wright African American History Museum in Detroit.

Ms.Shadrock is a Texas based artist who is best known for work which focuses on nature and the relationships between human beings and their spiritual/physical connection to the natural world. After earning her Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Texas at San Antonio in 2004, she also worked extensively in the art conservation and restoration fields, revitalizing many historical buildings and churches across the country.

OPENING OCTOBER 3RD
Our quarterly Members Gallery exhibit features nine new member artists with a variety of work, including photography, encaustic, and mixed-media. The Members Gallery shows are designed to showcase our SAALM membership in a salon setting with attractive price points and a variety of media. Michelle Belto and Laura Roberts are the gallery managers.
CONSTRUCTION UPDATES

The foundation is poured and inspected, and SAALM contractor Ruben Tamez and crew will start framing the walls this week.

We are getting closer to our goal of creating a state-of-the art storage vault for the Art League's permanent collection which represents 100+ years of priceless regional art, history, and culture.

Next spring, the former vault space adjacent to the Gift Shop will be transformed into a dedicated gallery for our Edgar B. Davis Wildflower Competition paintings. Come by and take a look at what's happening. Your membership and your donations help make all this possible!
