ASV DAY 2019

Thank you for Coming and Supporting our Community Day!

American School of Valencia celebrated the school community spirit on Saturday, September 28, 2019, by hosting the annual event ASV Day.  The party included entertainment and games for children, swimming time, athletic events, a book fair, live music, and the exciting and much-awaited raffle.

Over 800 people enjoyed the special paella menu prepared by Colevisa or the snacks served outside.  The weather was great, and the party was a wonderful time thanks in large part to the group of parents, students, and staff members who helped with setup and running different roles.

We want to extend our appreciation to the large number of partners and sponsors who contributed to fund the event or organize the raffle.  Meet all of them here.

Enjoy several pictures of the event on the ASV Facebook fan page.

General Announcements

School Holidays and Annual Professional Development

As it is determined in the official academic calendar, ASV students will not have classes from Wednesday, October 9 to Friday, October 11, due to the regional holiday Nou d’octubre or Valencian Community Day.  In the meantime, the school staff will work on Thursday and Friday, as ASV is holding the annual Professional Development workshops. Enjoy this short break!

ASV families interested in the enrollment of children born in the years 2017, 2018 or 2019 are invited  to contact the Admissions Office by email or phone to initiate the enrollment process for the 2020-2021 academic year.  This information will allow the school to activate the parent’s profile on OpenApply, a platform offering a comprehensive online, paperless process, easy to access while saving time and resources.

The Admissions Office will limit this process to the current school community until October 31, 2019; consequently, families with children at ASV will have preference in the admissions process.  As of November 1, 2019, available spots will be open to new families.

Remember that children born in 2017 must apply for Prekinder 1 and those born in 2018 and 2019 must apply for Nursery.

Meet our New Teachers (3/3)

Joel Duarte. San Antonio (Texas, United States)

Mr. Duarte has a Masters in Education and has taught at high schools in Texas and Oregon. After studying Philosophy and Psychology at university, he worked for a decade as a sommelier.  “Then I lived abroad teaching English as a foreign language in Thailand, Japan, and Korea,” he relates to ASV Voices.

Mr. Duarte has enjoyed the transition into living in Valencia and working at ASV: “The faculty has made me feel quite at home and I am impressed by the community of the school - particularly the kindness and unique insights of the students I have had the privilege to work with.”

Melissa Duarte. Colorado Springs (Colorado, United States)

Ms. Duarte has a background in Philosophy and Psychology, in addition to English, and has been teaching in Japan, Oregon, and Texas before coming to ASV.  “I adore digging in to text analysis, discussing multiple perspectives, and getting to hear awesome ideas from my students,” she explains.

“I believe ASV students are the most intellectually engaged, friendly, and fun students I have worked with up to this point,” she adds before describing Valencia as “a beautiful city” and sharing that the arrival to ASV is being “a great adventure!"

World Teachers’ Day

Each year on October 5, on the anniversary of the adoption of the UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers, this agency leads a celebration around the world to highlight the importance of education.  With the theme,Young Teachers: The future of the Profession” 2019 World Teachers’ Day aims to “to take stock of achievements, and to address some of the issues central for attracting and keeping the brightest minds and young talents in the profession,” UNESCO stated in the official note.

The official WTD event will take place in Paris on Monday, October, 7.  Here at ASV students in grades 3, 4 and 5 collected some thoughts on the role of their teachers in Elementary School; stay tuned to our social media to see a sample of them.

Call for Parent Delegates

Each class in each grade level at ASV is offered the opportunity to select a Parent Delegate. The Parent Delegate’s role is to attend monthly meetings with the appropriate Principal, communicate information to parents, share concerns of parents (prior to meetings), assist with preparations for special events, and support ASV's mission.

The school will announce the Parent Delegate list prior to held the first delegate meetings:

  • Monday, October 21, 2019, at 15:15 1 (Preschool and Elementary School).
  • Wednesday, October 30, 2019, from 15:30 to 16:15 (Middle School and High School).

2019-2020 Parent - Teacher Conference Plan

In order to minimize disruption to our educational program and offer more times of the day for parents to come in for conferences, we will have a longer day for parent conferences this year, beginning at 9:30 and ending at 18:00.  Conferences will be on the following dates:

  • Nursery &PK1:  October 23, 2019
  • PK2 & Kinder:  December 11, 2019
  • Grades 1-5:  January 15, 2020

In addition, to respect parents’ time, if there is any reason to have a parent meeting within two weeks of the regular conferences, school staff will make every effort to provide all progress information at that meeting.

In Preschool we have moved to a very detailed, state-of-the-art progress reporting platform, Teaching Strategies GOLD.  Because of the amount of information contained in the report card, and because many parents are in regular touch with teachers through the daily agenda, email, and other conferences, the spring conference naturally has become less necessary.  We therefore will be making the spring conference optional (March 25, 2020). Preschool teachers will request a conference only in cases where there are specific items to discuss.

If you have a concern at any time, please feel free to contact your child’s teacher or other appropriate ASV staff.

Preschool and Elementary School

Nursery and PreKinder 1 Parent Conferences

Our teachers in Nursery and PreKinder 1 are preparing the October Parent Conferences, a time to give feedback about how children are progressing after six weeks of school.  The meetings will take place on Wednesday, October 23 from 9:30 to 18:00.  Please use your class link below to access the sign-up calendar.

Please remember: Your phone/device must be set to Madrid Standard Time and you must write your child’s name in the description box.

Parent Reading Volunteers

The call for Reading Volunteers in Grades 1, 2 and 3 is open and waiting for more parents available to support reading routines  in those grades.  The program will start on Monday, October 14, 2019.

If you are interested, please contact Ms. Elena Corchs (Preschool and Elementary School Vice Principal) marking your preferred days and times.  Next week you will receive a notification containing the assigned class, and the day and time for this reading support.

Remember that privacy restrictions do not allow to be a reading volunteer in your child’s class.

Student Council Team-building Activities

Elementary Student Council kicked off with some team-building activities.  Students were asked to place themselves in order by various criteria:  height, birthdate, birth day-of-the-month, etc.  The communication and coordination involved in these tasks reveals what students may need to support their teamwork.  The students listened and developed a plan in each case, and were able to complete the tasks quickly.  They have already begun planning for an elementary Spirit Week!

Mystery Science Program in Grade 2

Second grade has been working the unit on animal biodiversity within the Mystery Science units of study that ASV has implemented in Elementary School.  Mystery Science supports engagement in scientific inquiry.  In this unit children have learned about how different bird species have different feeding habits.  Their study culminated in a hands-on activity: building bird feeders, which students will bring home to observe if birds in their area go to eat the seeds.

Clean Hands Workshop with Ms. Inma

The school nurse visited PreKinder 1 groups in their Spanish class to teach why it is important to keep our hands clean. Children learned why everyone must wash them properly before lunchtime, after playing in the park, after using the restroom or anytime we have a cold.

Grade 3 Blue completed the CARE Values-meter and celebrated by having a Pajama Party. #PositiveLearningEnvironment #PBIS

Athletics and Extracurricular Activities

FDM Leagues

We have sent to all families enrolled in athletic activities which are included in the FDM League (Field Hockey, Volleyball and Basketball) from Grade 3 to Grade all the information concerning this League.

ASV has until October 8, 2019 to register to the FDM League.  If your child is enrolled in one of these activities and you haven’t received the email please let Ms Escarlata Casas know as soon as possible (asvplus@asvalencia.org).

ASV Playing Outfits

If your child is registered to an athletic activity and wants to participate in friendly games and tournaments it is compulsory for them to wear the ASV athletic Outfit. If they have their outfit students can wear it for ASV+ training sessions, but NOT for PE.

Please make sure you order your child’s playing outfit in advance as SVELTO takes 2-3 weeks to send the outfits. Please fill in THIS form as soon as possible. The sizes correspond to the PE outfit, although the Basketball outfit we find its a bit longer, both t-shirt and pants; and the Volleyball outfit is a bit tighter; we recommend to buy one more size than the PE outfit.

All students who have the outfit from 2018-19 don’t have to buy a new one as we are using the same.

Three athletic activities started the afternoon training this week. This coming Monday, October 7, 2019, the Middle School Boys Soccer group and the Grade 6 Volleyball club will have their first session

The trainings run from 16:45 to 18:00. All student-athletes will have a healthy snack from 16:30 to 16:45 in Visions Remember there is no late bus, families have to pick up their child at 18:15 at school.
