European donor countries care about sexual and reproductive safety and freedom

Opposition to sexual and reproductive health and rights in Europe has significantly increased in recent years, and we stand at a critical moment in European history with a new populist rhetoric of fear, national self-interest and conservatism. Still policies and funding for global development and SRH/FP were solidified and championed in many global fora.

Countdown 2030 Europe analysis concluded that ten out of twelve key European donor countries sustained or increased their funding for SRH/FP with Ireland and Spain seeing the most significant increase and the UK, Norway, the Netherlands and Sweden remaining the largest donors.

On the policy side, European donors have strongly increased their commitment and focus on SRH/FP.

The Nairobi Summit puts wind under the sails of the SRHR agenda

We are at a crossroad in Europe. It’s never been more critical to ensure a continued progressive voice for Europe on sexual reproductive health and rights, including family planning (SRHR/FP). So did European donors step up during the Nairobi Summit on the ICPD25?

All 12 European donor governments and the EU (followed under Countdown 2030 Europe), made a range of financial and policy commitments during the Nairobi Summit. Read our full analysis of new and old commitments.

Also read about the commitments made by Countdown 2030 Europe at the summit.

We now turn to the next phase of the Nairobi process: accountability and follow up during Beijing+25.

The EU commits €29 million during Nairobi Summit to support adolescents SRHR in Africa, the Caribbean and the Pacific

The European Union as a political leader and key donor for promoting and advancing SRHR worldwide ensured to walk the “leaving no one behind” talk by taking a major commitment during the Summit. As the EU representative, Ms Henriette Geiger, Director of the Directorate People and Peace in DG DEVCO (Directorate General for Development and Cooperation) of the European Commission made a 29 Million Euro (approximately $32 Million USD) announcement for the EU funding package to support youth led SRHR programming in Africa, the Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) countries. Supported through the intra-ACP programme of the European Development Fund (11th EDF, 2014 -2020), the EU’s commitment will be translated in a call for proposals on adolescents SRHR in the ACP region in 2020.
