With this forum, we strive to create a sanctuary where you can share your concerns about your process. Actively monitoring your early cancer diagnosis without intervention may often be the wisest alternative - especially since approximately one-third of men following this protocol never need treatment. However, Active Surveillance (AS) presents different challenges and asks different questions. Many following this protocol recognize they are not well served by general prostate cancer support groups.

ASPI (Active Surveillance Patients International), AnCan, home for virtual support groups, and UsTOO, the leading education and support organization for prostate cancer, come together to provide an AS specific virtual support group. Join a peer-led virtual support group online or by phone from wherever you are and chat with other men - and care partners - about issues that face men on AS. Consider

Two issues that have been on my mind and that I have heard discussed on this meeting, and several other meetings are;

1. DIAGNOSIS.

2. And is ACTIVE SURVEILLANCE the same as having prostate cancer.

“Diagnosis" seems to be an issue for several reasons. The first, being many of our doctors seem to expect us to be better informed about PCA than they are.  Hand in hand with being “informed” is being knowledgeable about what these different tests mean and reveal. A second reason is that some doctors seem to leave our course of treatment up to ourselves. The second issue seems a "moot point" when we realize that Active Surveillance patients often become ACTIVE and pursue a more aggressive form of treatment.

One of the ASPI members with a PSA of 20 and Gleason 7, just had a medical recommendation to have an intervention. He is considering that now. This may be a worthwhile topic to add to the mix on Wednesday. You will probably notice that Mark and I will be tinkering a little with our meeting format. Please bear with Mark and I. Our aim is for an open, free-flowing, and informative meeting where everyone is included in the discussion and has a chance to bring up subjects related to Active Surveillance.

Our ACTIVE SURVEILLANCE virtual meetings are scheduled for the first Wednesday of each month.

Thoughts from Mark Lichty...

Some of us just returned from the Prostate Cancer Research International (PCRI) conference. PCRI has led the charge on AS. We likely had the largest gathering of men on the planet at PCRI and much worthwhile information was shared. For the first time, PCRI provided 4 separate AS breakout sessions that were well-received by all AS attendees. Tune in to find out more and to help one another navigate this AS journey.

We look forward to seeing you, via laptop, or hearing from you.
