A Message From our President
Happy November!
The leaves are changing colors and the crisp mornings are such a change. Thanksgiving is just around the corner!
I want to take a moment to think about the 1 year Anniversary of one of the most devastating fires in California History. The Camp fire on November 8th has changed many lives forever. Paradise, as we know it, was lost that day forever. Many people have started rebuilding their lives slowly, either somewhere else or in and around Paradise. Some members from SI Chico and SI Bidwell Rancho were directly affected. We are very grateful for all the responses and the help in form of donations that came from all corners of the world from different Soroptimist clubs. SI Chico and SI Bidwell Rancho have been very committed to identify the needs and distribute the funds available.
November brings a couple deadlines for our busy Soroptimist schedules. The 15th is the deadline for the Live your Dream Applications and the deadline for nominations for the SNR Board 2020-2022 Biennium.
S.I.S.Y (SI South Yuba) has their Charter Dinner Party that evening in Wheatland. How fun to witness another new club starting up with so much enthusiasm!
I am really looking forward to our SUDS evening with SI Chico at the Commons Social Emporium. We always have a great time together!
I want to also take this opportunity again and thank all the Members from District 1 who donated the "Happy Bucks" at the Fall District Meeting to our Inspire S-club for their "Period Project". The students were very exited and much appreciated it. Pictures will follow as they complete the project.
There are so many things to be thankful for this Thanksgiving season. I am grateful to each and everyone of you. Your support, kind words and teamwork has helped me lead this club thus far. I couldn't do any of it without you!
Warm regards, Babette Maiss

Soroptimist Sierra Nevada Region News
Regional Governor: Lane Parks
Message from Governor Elect Sarah Carrasco
I have been attending District Meetings with my message for the next Biennium. This article is a reminder of my presentation as well as a message for those of you who were not able to attend your District Meeting.
The Region is looking to fill the positions of Governor Elect, Secretary, Treasurer, and District Directors for the 2020 – 2022 Biennium. Can you believe it, we are preparing for the next biennium? The deadline to submit nominations is November 15, 2019. The nomination form is on the SNR Website. The completed form goes to Nomination Coordinator Sharon Warner and her email address is on the form. Here is an FYI, the Region will no longer read the vote count, the Region’s Bylaws do not require this step, only the name of the successful candidate will be announced at conference.
We want qualified members to step up and help the Region continue its good works. To be nominated as Governor Elect you must have previously served on the Region Board. To serve as Secretary, Treasurer or District Director you must have previously served as a club president. We welcome you to contact any current or past Region Board Member to get information of their experience.
We also need to fill the position of Parliamentarian and Committee Chair/ Coordinators. The positions are appointed and if you have an interest in serving, please send an email expressing your interest to Governor Elect Sarah Carrasco at snrgovelect@soroptimistsnr.org.
There are a lot of reasons to serve at the Region level. It furthers leadership training. You will be part of a Region, which has been recognized as a “Healthy Region” by Soroptimist International of the Americas, for several biennium, in a row now. This Region has been fortunate; we have had, and currently have great women serving in leadership positions. We want that greatness to continue. Region successes do not happen at the hand of one person, it is the team efforts of the Region Board, Committee Chair/Coordinators and Committee Members who have made success possible.
If you are not familiar with the various positions feel free to reach out to any Board Member or Committee Chair/Coordinator. We all want to share our experiences. Personally, my experience has been nothing but positive. Interacting at this level of Soroptimist is a growth experience
I truly hope that all members give some thought on serving at the Region level. I am asking members to take the leap, join me in growing the membership, moving the dream programs forward, and continue to reach more women and girls and help them reach their dreams. My personal goal is to have the next Biennium be as great as this one or better.
Governor-Elect Sarah

I’m happy for the opportunity to share a little bit about myself with my fellow Soroptimists. It’s always good to get to know each other better. Originally from Ohio, I lived in Utah (and worked for the Osmonds!) for about 10 years, then moved on to Chico in 1989. I’ve been a member of Soroptimist for over 10 years and have served on many committees; however my favorite has always been the Focus Committee. I love giving money to people and organizations in need. In fact, giving is one of my favorite things to do. I served on the Board of Directors for North Valley Community Foundation for six years, took a mandatory one-year break, and now have served another five years, including two as President. I also formed my own non-profit organization, Orphan Care International, to help AIDS/HIV affected orphans in Zambia, Africa. I’d love to have you join me on my next trip in May of 2020.
I met my husband Gary in December of 1973 and married him in January of 1974 … yes, 3 weeks after I met him. We have been married for over 45 years! We have 4 children and 6 grandchildren … all who are wonderful human beings.
Besides volunteering, I love traveling. I have visited 6 continents, but have no plans to visit Antarctica, so 6 will have to be my limit. I also love boating, gardening, reading, crafting and laughing.
I love being a part of Soroptimists and working with women who love to give back. Thank you for the experience.
