Rafael Valdez was deported from the United States in 2013, bringing his American wife and children to live in his home town of Zacatecas, Mexico. Reporting in a Pulitzer Center-supported story for The Seattle Times, writer Nina Shapiro, photographer Erika Schultz, and videographer Corinne Chin offer a moving look at life in Mexico for deportees and their American-born families. Despite efforts to make the best of the situation, the Valdez family still longs to return home to the Seattle area. “I’m not sure where we belong,” says Joy Valdez, Rafael’s wife. “Maybe it’s harder on me than I realize.”
