President's Letter

Happy National Voter Registration Day!

You've heard how important it is for us to register 1.5 million new Republican voters in Texas in the next year in order to Keep Texas Red.  The Democrats have been aggressively registering voters across Texas, and the significant growth of Democrat voters led to many Republican loses in Texas in 2018.  You can be involved by promoting registration in your social groups.  Without being partisan you can ask to hold voter registration at community events, your social clubs, and at your church.  The Republican Party also has targeted lists of people who have recently moved to Texas, so you can help register people in your neighborhood.

Even if you are not a registrar, you can help.  First, encourage everyone to confirm that their registration is up-to-date.  Many people mistakenly believe that a change in their drivers license ensures that their voter registration is updated.  I can't tell you how many people I processed during the 2018 primary who had an updated driver's license but an outdated voter registration -- hundreds at the Randall's on Braker alone.  Don't be one of those people whose vote does not count.  Confirm your registration through the Texas Secretary of State site at :  https://teamrv-mvp.sos.texas.gov/MVP/mvp.do

Ways to register to vote in Texas or update your registration to match your current residence:

  • Text TXVOTE to 72000.  Then follow the instructions.
  • Get an application online through the Texas Secretary of State's site: https://www.votetexas.gov/register-to-vote/index.html
  • Register with one of our members who is a certified Deputy Voter Registrar -- Carla Birk, Linda Durnin, Susan Friedrich, Mary Heffernan, and others

The last day to register for the November 5 election is October 7.

Let's work together to Keep Texas Red!

Sincerely,

Carla Birk
2019 President, NWARW

Caring for America:  Breast Cancer Awareness - Knitted Knockers project
Elaine Lehmann - Chair

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness month.  Our member Sheri Radomsky has been involved with the Knitted Knockers project for several years.  She'll share information about how they help women who are recovering from a mastectomy.  The club will collect monetary donations for the project, and Sheri will host a training at her home on October 22 at 7 PM to teach anyone who wishes to help make "knitted knockers".  RSVP for the October 22 training to Sheri at sheri.rad@gmail.com.  If you want to come out that evening just to chat, that works too!

TFRW Convention is almost here!  Our club has 20 members going so far.  Even if you are not an elected delegate, members can attend as a guest and participate in all activities except voting.  Guests can register for all three days, or they can purchase one-day passes.

Good luck to our members Susan Friedrich who is on the slate for TFRW Treasurer and Mary Heffernan who is running for District Director!

Legislative Update - Jan Duncan, Chair

Amendments to the Texas constitution that were proposed during the Legislative Session will be on the ballot November 5.  Here are the propositions that will be on the ballot:
http://thetravistracker.blogspot.com/2019/07/on-ballot-10-constitutional.html

In response to recent mass shootings in El Paso and Odessa, Governor Abbott issued eight executive orders, and he formed select committees on Mass Violence Protection and Community Safety to study the issues, get expert and public testimony, and propose future legislative changes. Hearings began last week in the Texas House, and this week the Senate will hear invited testimony.  In October the committees will travel to Odessa and El Paso.  The Republican Party of Texas Executive Committee issued a resolution calling on elected officials to support the strong Second Amendment stance contained in its platform (full text of resolution:  https://www.texasgop.org/resolution-urging-support-of-the-republican-party-of-texas-platform-planks-related-to-the-right-to-keep-and-bear-arms/).

The Austin City Council met last week and made no changes related to the public camping ordinances.  Prior to the meeting ideas were discussed for restricting camping in certain areas of the city, but no changes were made.  Mayor Adler and council members continue to meet with constituents.  TCRP Chairman Matt Mackowiak has worked with others to create a non-partisan PAC to pursue a formal petition effort to put the matter on the ballot in May 2020 if the city continues with current plans.  To sign the petition and get the newsletter go to www.SaveAustinNow.com.

Literacy - Rosemary Edwards, Chair

Our club delivered U.S. Constitutions and flag pins to fifth graders at Barrington, Doss, and Pillow elementary schools in celebration of Constitution Day, September 17. This is an annual literacy event.  The club's executive committee also voted to donate $100 to author Jane Scoggins Bauld who visited our club last month and is the author of several children's books including the "America" book that many have received.

October 16 is Dictionary Day, celebrating the birthday of Noah Webster who is considered the father of the American dictionary.  The club will deliver children's dictionaries to third graders at local elementary schools on the afternoon of October 16, 1-3PM.   If you would like to help, please contact Rosemary at edwards.r8@gmail.com.
