“…and all at once, summer collapsed into fall.”
– Oscar Wilde

The sudden onset of wet weather has driven us inside and turned our thoughts to sweaters and raking leaves, and fireplaces. One of the coziest places we can think of to enjoy a few minutes or hours of respite from the rains is of course, BBVE.

So what's new?

We have some tasty new items on our food menu, including bagel sandwiches made with authentic Mount Royal Bagels and topped with Bright Greens: two of our local food partners. We also have a croissant omelette that can be grilled or eaten cold if you're needing something on the run - either way they're delicious!

Friday evenings are for live entertainment and we have assembled an outstanding lineup of performers this season: some new faces, some perennial favorites and a few special surprises. We hope you'll join us for great music, entertainment and social gathering.

Our fall stock is arriving daily: apparel (two new Canadian clothing lines), and accessories (including socks and umbrellas) along with new giftware, kitchen and home decor, jewellery, art and greeting cards, health and beauty products, condiments - and in keeping with our general store aesthetic, notions, what-nots, games and other sundry amusements.

We hope to see you soon - no need to wait for a rainy day!

HELD OVER TO OCTOBER 10: This month we're pleased to present a show and sale of Marilyn Gallant's art. Marilyn is a graphic artist with a fine arts background and draws inspiration from Monet’s impressionism and Van Gogh’s vibrant use of colour. Marilyn creates her art using a number of different styles and forms.
We're very grateful for the relationships we've built not only with our customers but our neighboring business, suppliers, growers, artisans and artists. This month we're featuring our partnership with Carnivore Meats & More.

JEFF STEVENSON

No cover Friday! Drop by the cafe or call us at 778-351-0178 during business hours to save a seat.
These days Jeff Stevenson calls Brentwood Bay home but he was a contributor to the vibrant British music scene of the late 60s and early 70s, writing several commercially successful pop tunes whose carefully crafted hooks and melodies will leave you wondering whether he penned tunes for any of the artists he now features in his extensive repertoire: Cat Stevens, Eric Burden, The Beatles and many others.
OCT 18 7:30PM
SONGWRITERS CIRCLE

No cover Friday! Drop by the cafe or call us at 778-351-0178 during business hours to save a seat.
Songwriters circles are an opportunity for musicians to collaborate musically with other songwriters in a live, interactive setting. It's rewarding and exciting to hear how the artists add their unique nuance to one another's compositions. Tonight's circle will be shared by three local musicians of exceptional talent:
Daniel Cook is a songwriter of extraordinary sensitivity and a frequent collaborator with other talented musicians, several of whom also constitute his excellent backup band, The Radiators
Lisa Bosman is well known to our audience for her solo performances at BBVE. She also leads vocal workshops, which comes as no surprise to anyone who's had the pleasure of listening to her outstanding contralto tones.
Ray Spencer is the driving force behind many local songwriter circles and is a seasoned folk-roots composer and performer on south Vancouver Island music scene. He's also one-third of Clancy's Front Porch, who will play BBVE later this season. Ray recently released the album Two Way Traffic One Lane Road.
Mike Regimbal is a multi-instrumentalist, arranger and producer and has been a prominent member of the Victoria music scene for many years. Mike's a member of the Cajun/Zydeco band Bijoux du Bayou which played BBVE earlier this year and will return later this season.

NOV 8 7:30PM
LISA BOSMAN

No cover Friday! Drop by the cafe or call us at 778-351-0178 during business hours to save a seat.
Lisa knows what you want to hear. Of course, some people would pay to hear her sing the phone book (are they still a thing?). Her voice is just that good and so is the sound she coaxes from her guitar. So when she plays a Janice Ian or Indigo Girls or Jame Taylor song, it washes over you like a warm southern breeze. What better way to wind down your week?
How do No Cover Fridays work?
Most Friday evening music events are no-cover. That means we don't sell tickets or charge admission*. But you can still save a seat by getting your name on our Advance Seating list. Drop by the cafe or call us during business hours (you must speak to someone who can check to see if we still have seats available - please don't leave a message), and give us the name of each person in your party. Arrive prior to 7pm on the evening of the event and we'll have seats for you. At 7pm sharp all unclaimed seats are released for walk-ins: first come, first served.
* We encourage our audience to help support the performers who come to play our venue. There is a pay-what-you-can tip basket at every no-cover evening.
At first glance, our merchandise selection may appear rather random and arbitrary. And while that's somewhat true (after all we are an emporium), our intent is to offer items of particular interest and quality. Such is the case with Tipsy OlivesSable & Rosenfeld was started by two foody friends, Myra Sable and Carol Rosenfeld in Creed's Department Store on Toronto's Bloor Street in 1970. After Esquire Magazine ran a full page feature on their Russian mustard, their condiments quickly found their way onto the shelves of such venerable retailers as Neiman Marcus and Bloomingdales in the U.S., Fortnum & Mason in England and Fauchon in Paris. The reason for their success is high quality, zestfully deliciousness, and while Tipsy Olives are specifically and meticulously prepared to adorn the perfect martini (they are after all bathed in vermouth), they're also equally delicious straight out of the jar. Be warned: they are addictive!
This season we're very pleased to offer a selection of apparel from two different BC-based fashion designers.

Alchemy Fashions are designed by Trisha Hinders in Roberts Creek, BC. Trish has been working closely with the same small family businesses in India for over 20 years. Their long-term business relationships are rooted in friendship, trust and respect. sweatshop-free Trish pays more than fair and living wages to the pattern masters, cutting masters, production supervisors, tailors and finishers and guarantees that all workers have regular hours, breaks and holidays, and that they work in well-lit, healthy environments.

Leopards & Roses Designer Anne Toube whose bold designs start from a spark of inspiration, stemming from many different sources; everything from colours and fabrics to flowers, jewelry and more. She then takes them to Nepal where they're transformed into handmade, wearable fashions. Their Child Education Program provides top level tutoring for children from families where at least one parent works in factories that manufacture for Leopards & Roses. Armed with this kind of education the intent is for these children to have every opportunity available to them upon graduation and even better, the capacity to give back to their community.
