Hidden rocks to mark remembrance in town
Painted poppy rocks are to be hidden around Harlow next month in memory of the 128 soldiers who served and died in the first world war.
There will be a total of 129 rocks hidden around the town, one for each of the 128 soldiers from Harlow and one special rock to commemorate the 75th anniversary of D-Day.
Hiding painted rocks and finding them has become a popular pastime in Harlow with the council teaming up with Facebook group Harlow Rocks to run the project.
The hunt will begin on October 5 and continue until Remembrance Day on November 10.
Each rock will link to one of the soldiers and be numbered.
Families will be encouraged to take a photo of the rock and take it to the Civic Centre (Monday to Friday 9am-4.30pm) where a certificate about the soldier will be presented to the person who finds the rock.
All the rocks, which have been donated by Wickes, have been decorated by local volunteers.
There has been so much demand to make rocks that extra rocks (without numbers) will be placed around the town.
