This is the last call for the following courses coming up in October:

All these courses are running in Chesterfield.  Discounts are available for group bookings or delegates attending more than one course.

Back by Demand - Third Date for Course on Lime and Cement Stabilisation

Following demand for a third outing this year, our course on lime and cement stabilisation is running again on 12 November 2019 at the award winning Ringwood Hall Hotel and Spa in Chesterfield.  This Level 3 course is aimed at those with experience of earthworks wanting to expand their understanding and skills on the theory and practice of soil stabilisation.  Each time it has run it has generated lively discussions with enthusiastic delegates and received excellent feedback.  Follow this link to download the course descriptor.

The course will be delivered by
Dr Paul Beetham, who is an ICE appointed Panel Expert advising HS2 on soil stabilisation, and has extensive experience of soil stabilisation working both for specialist contractors and as a consultant.  The course costs £250 + VAT per delegate.  Just contact our Dr Andy Goodwin to reserve your place.

Thanks to Britpave for Their Ongoing Support!

More CPD Ideas

This latest list of CPD ideas should be useful for anyone but are especially useful for graduates pursuing professional qualification with the ICE.

NEC4 has been around a while now and understanding of the changes is developing.  If you want a quick review, have a look at the document downloadable via this link.

CMC's (Constrained Modulus Columns) are an alternative approach to traditional ground improvement techniques that provide a fast and economical ground improvement alternative to piling. The method was developed in the 1990's and is gaining ground in the UK.  More information on the technique can be downloaded from here

Wind Loading is a topic that came up in several mock interviews recently, with discussion on matters such as vortex shedding and the pressure distribution on buildings.  An example of a eurocode calculation for wind can be downloaded from here as a starter, but wider reading around this topic is a good idea for anyone who thinks this topic could come up in their review.

Tips to Help You Prepare for Your ICE Professional Review in Spring 2020

With the application window for the Spring 2020 Professional Review session opening in January, those planning to apply will no doubt be preparing for it already.  As a long-standing reviewer for the ICE, our Dr Andy Goodwin reminds you of his six top tips to help you prepare:

  • Read your draft Professional Report again and again, and get others to read it too (they will read what it says and read between the lines…)
  • Ensure your report addresses all of the required attributes in a well-balanced way; try marking in the margins of a draft which attribute each paragraph relates to
  • Practice your presentation, to yourself and others, to ensure when under pressure you stay within the time limit
  • Read through your quarterly reports and other records of your experience, to refresh your memory and identify good examples of how you have achieved each sub-attribute
  • Revise your knowledge and understanding of all things civils related, including keeping up to date with the latest industry news (read your NCE!)
  • Practice your interview skills
