Dear friends and donors,

Eyes on Animals has been very active in the political field lately.

EonA in Parliament to talk about veal export to China

Last week, Eyes on Animals was invited to give a talk during a hearing in the Dutch parliament about trade with China. After 17 years of negotiations, China wants to now import veal from the Netherlands.

EonA director Lesley gave a talk about what kind of effect this would have on the welfare of unweaned calves here. Supplying more and more of the world with veal means the Netherlands would have to import more and more live calves to fatten them here and keep up with the demand.
Not only did we make clear that this goes against everything we should be doing to fight climate change, but that the rearing and transport of such young animals is causing horrendous suffering on a large scale. We described our recent investigations on the life of these young animals, from birth to slaughter.

The Netherlands should set an example by increasing their production and investment in plant protein and phasing out deals that depend on animal protein.

EonA in Parliament to talk about ritual slaughter

Eyes on Animals inspector Asalet has been inspecting ritual slaughterhouses in Turkey and Europe for the past 7 years. He has seen the worst kinds of suffering (e.g. cows with broken legs dragged out of trucks and having their necks cut, bulls stabbed in the neck to make them “docile” before cutting their throats, etc…). Together with the EonA Turkey team, Asalet has also reached several milestones:
  • organized paper work to import captive bolt pistols and cartridges into Turkey (which was impossible up to now),
  • first cattle abattoir ever in Turkey to stun cattle
  • first slaughter equipment manufacturer in Turkey to build upright restraint boxes instead of trip-floor
Asalet is neither an Imam nor a veterinarian, but he has thoroughly studied the Koran and religious documents and has seen many slaughterhouses and read many related scientific reports. Because of this he was asked to give a talk to politicians about the proposed new law in the Netherlands to making stunning animals prior to slaughter mandatory.

It is important to realize that Asalet is Muslim and 100% in favor of rendering animals unconscious before slaughter.

Dutch Ministry invites EonA to expert-meeting on barn fires

EonA inspector Madelaine was invited by the Dutch Ministry of Agriculture to an expert-meeting on barn fires. Madelaine has done a thesis on this subject and is frequently on location during or right after the barn fire. She was able to explain to the authorities what is required to reduce the risk of such a rapidly spreading fire and how to respond more efficiently so no or fewer animals die a terrible death. She also discussed the need for good cooperation and clear agreements between veterinarians and firefighters to speed up veterinary care for animals that have survived the barn fire.

With your support, we can inform politicians about the need to better protect animals through policies and regulations - directly based on our experiences in the field. Thank you very much!
