A small percentage of the population struggling through severe poverty and social isolation is using a large share of provincial health-care dollars, according to research conducted by the North Simcoe Community Health Link.
Five per cent of people in Ontario use two-thirds of all health-care dollars, while 10 per cent of the population accounts for nearly three-quarters of health-care dollars.
CHIGAMIK Community Health Care Centre, part of the North Simcoe Community Health Link, was selected by the Rural Ontario Institute to lead one of three projects aimed at better understanding and improving community vitality and well-being.
“We know from the work that we have been doing in our various communities in our region that social isolation correlates with poverty and poor health outcomes,” said David Jeffery, executive director at CHIGAMIK.

A major factor that distinguishes Community Health Centres (CHCs) from other primary health care delivery models is the work we do in the community to promote higher levels of community wellbeing. One of the overarching goals for CHCs is community belonging, which can come about when clients and members of the community are engaged in meaningful ways and relationships are nurtured.
This year's Community Health and Wellbeing Week is happening from October 21st to 27th across Ontario. During the week, we'll be celebrating our work on social media to connect people to the resources and services they need to stay healthy here in Midland and surrounding areas. We will also be presenting our insights and lessons learned on the "Power of Belonging" at the Rural Ontario Institute's "Measuring Rural Community Vitality" event on Thursday, October 24th in Cobourg.
