Winter Weight Gain?  Blame the Season Change
(And how to stop it)

Hibernation Season
We often  do we blame our winter weight gain on extra cookies, great food, and lack of exercise during the season’s cold and dark days? According to science, hibernation may be partially to respnsible as well!

Storing Fat

During the season change (late summer/early fall), the brain’s command center, the hypothalamus, tramits signals via the neuroendocrine axis to switch on "hibernation mode" to increase insulin resistance.  As a result, our liver increases fat production to be stored in preparation for winter.  Ants get ready for winter by putting away their winter food; we (unfortunately) store fat!

Stop the Cycle

The good news is you can limit weight gain (or stop it altogether), by not overly stressing about it, adopting sustainable eating habits, making healthier food swaps, filling up on wholesome foods, avoid misleading food labels, moving more and planning ahead. Read more

Trick or Treat SAFELY
Halloween is an exciting time for children, but it's our job to make sure they have fun while being safe! Here are some tips on how to keep your children safe this Halloween.
  • Plan costumes that are bright and reflective. Make sure that shoes fit well and that costumes are short enough to prevent tripping, entanglement or contact with flame.
  • If a sword, cane, or stick is a part of your child's costume, make sure it is not sharp or long. A child may be easily hurt by these accessories if he stumbles or trips.
  • Consider using a flashlight or glow stick instead of a candle to light your pumpkin. If you do use a candle, a votive candle is safest.
  • To keep homes safe for visiting trick-or-treaters, parents should remove from the porch and front yard anything a child could trip over such as garden hoses, toys, bikes and lawn decorations.
  • Only go to homes with a porch light on and never enter a home or car for a treat.
