Speaking of cooking, the holiday season is upon us.  Need some new or trusted, delicious recipes and party planning tips?  Come browse our cooking shelves' holiday and entertainment planning sections.

Calling all mystery/thriller buffs and sci/fantasy fans!  The last two months' donations included a treasure trove of authors that are new to our shelves.  Could it be that your favorite writers (or next new favorites) are waiting for you?

Please join us on Oct 5th and 6th at Books Among Friends in Northgate Mall for another great Big Book Sale.
As a reminder, with Sears closed, you will need to enter near Plato's Closet.  Once inside the mall, look for the sign and turn left towards the old Sears.  Don't forget that members can enter the sale at 10:00 AM, and the sale is open to the public from 12:00 AM - 4:00 PM.

We could really use some strong backs!  If you or someone else you know of would be interested in assisting us during book sales transporting books or working as a cashier, please contact us at fodlcontact@gmail.com.

Thanks to you and your continued support, our August book sale was one of our best book sales on record!

COMMUNITY NEWS:

Durham County Library Director Tammy Baggett and Grant Writer Annie Mountcastle Post joined Investigator Judy Rodriguez and other Durham Police Department employees when they unveiled a new “Little DPD Library” on July 30 in front of DPD Headquarters at 602 East Main Street.

The library is part of the free “Take a Book, Leave a Book” outreach program. Children and adults visiting headquarters, or who live nearby, can take a book from an eye-catching mini library. They are free to sit outside and read, read inside while waiting for accompanying adults to transact business, or take the book home. Visitors can also leave age and theme appropriate books in the mini library. The Little Library, which includes books in English and Spanish, has proven to be very popular so far.

The program also created an opportunity to partner with local groups and organizations such as Book Harvest, the Durham County Library, Durham’s Partnership for Children, and Durham Public Schools.

STAFF SCHOLARSHIP UPDATE:

Floyd Harris will complete his Certificate in Social Media Strategy and Management Information from Wake Technical Community College on October 3 thanks to a generous scholarship from the Friends of the Durham Library awarded last spring. He stated that the course has been very fun and informative and that he has engendered new job skills which he will use for the Durham County Library Marketing Department. Since June, he has been working with the Library’s Facebook page creating content, monitoring activity, and responding to questions and concerns. With his hard work and support, the web page statistics have greatly improved!  Furthermore, he will continue in this role by assisting Grace Aldis, our new Publications Coordinator.

The Social Media Certification program is a joint endeavor between Wake Tech and Raleigh marketing agency Walk West, inc5000’s fastest growing agency in North Carolina for the second year in a row. Walk West is also creator and producer of the popular viral videos from YouTube star Penn Holderness and family--though “viral” is a frowned upon term. Along with completing the coursework, Floyd worked with a team developing a social media strategy for a start-up EMS technology company and earned a Google Analytics certification and a Facebook Analytics certification.  Floyd expressed his gratefulness for the academic scholarship in helping to make this opportunity possible, and we are excited for him to continue his great work with the Durham County Library.
THANK YOU!

A special thanks to everyone who participated in the Spring into Love program back in May hosted by the North Regional Library.  The romance festival was a smashing success!  195  people attended this fun filled event with a diverse author group. Eve Marion of Durham Friends of the Library also sold books at the event.
