Submitted by Susan Taylor

The Kawartha Art Gallery, in partnership with Curve Lake First Nation and the Pinnguaq Association, has received a $743,800 Grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) for a digital literacy program aptly called Te(a)ch. Aimed to expand an arts-based digital literacy program for Anishnaabe youth in the Curve Lake community, the three year program will offer the chance for its participants to creatively express themselves, to better understand each other, and to learn about their shared histories and hopes for the future. The program harnesses the strength of Anishnaabe knowledge, increasing the capacity of the youth of Curve Lake to use new medias to re-interpret their culture.

IN THEIR OWN WORDS
Little Red Canoes -
A Creative Idea Turns Sentimental And Heartwarming
Submitted by Daniel Marlatt in collaboration with Roxanne Carter and Margaret Cunningham

It’s been just over two months since I started the "lil red canoe" Project. What started as a simple idea of carving a canoe and sending it down the river has quickly turned into something much more. In the beginning, I set a goal of 99 little canoes for 99 days, committed to traditional environmentally friendly dying colour methods. Hence the "lil red canoe" Project was born on the Miskwaa Ziibi River (Ojibwa for Red River).

Submitted by Bev Williams

James Lukow is a renowned local fine craftsman who truly respects his chosen material, natural wood. And he thoroughly enjoys working closely with each individual client when creating that special 'dream' piece for each appreciative customer. Having learned from his father who was an honest skilled cabinetmaker /furniture refinisher, James developed a deep appreciation of the natural beauty of the various woods in their unpainted state. The richness of the colour, the fine grain and patterning of each different wood-inspired his love for this useful and beautiful material.

YOUTH NEWS
Christina Dedes - An Emerging Young Artist
Submitted by Roxanne Carter

Emerging young artist Christina Dedes found a passion for art while attending I.E. Weldon Secondary School in Lindsay. High school art teachers Lesley Drummond (KLAC board member), and Paul Marshall were instrumental in nurturing Christina’s interest in artistic expression. Christina enjoyed the atmosphere in the classroom where she spent four years in high school concentrating and developing her practice. During this time, she took part in the Juried Student Art Show at the Kawartha Art Gallery. One of the jurors, Mr. Gary Sedore, chose her piece during the student show, then generously awarded her with the Margaret Sedore Bursary, which paid for her first semester tuition at post-secondary.

History of Communications Explored With Doors Open Kawartha Lakes
Submitted by Margaret Cunningham

Doors Open Kawartha Lakes was held on September 8, showcasing a variety of sites to celebrate the importance of communications in our lives. Communications has evolved over the years and this public event allowed residents and visitors to witness the history of its development. From reading and writing in a one-room schoolhouse, to sending telegrams over the wire, to looking at the printed word that travelled over rail and water, our forebears laid a path for communication that still used today. Fourteen sites across the municipality opened their doors to explore communications through the implementation of past and current tools, systems and services across Kawartha Lakes.
