HM|HC Talks: Peer Support on Campus

 

HM|HC Talks is an exciting new series of online meetings available to our community of practice. Each meeting will focus on a particular health literacy topic and feature stimulus presenters who are doing related work on their campuses. The meetings will be hosted on GoToMeeting, allowing for active attendance. HM|HC Talks' format intends for attendees to participate in dialogue and then collaborate with presenters and other campus members on special topics of interest.

Online meeting participants will:
  • Learn from fellow attendees on the topic of peer support initiatives, programs and approaches on campus
  • Meet like-minded people
  • Participate in facilitated conversations
  • Build connections to help local effort and broader collaboration
HM|HC Talks format:
  • Interactive meeting with the option to connect over webcam (preferred), chat or phone
  • Stimulus speakers to discuss a health literacy topic followed by group dialogue

Kiran Natt

Kiran is one of two Coordinators of the Peer Support Resource Centre (PSRC) at Kwantlen Polytechnic University.  She started with the program as a volunteer in 2015 when it first launched, and then moved into the role of Coordinator. A recent graduate in Psychology and Criminology with a minor in Counselling, Kiran is passionate about creating a better experience for students on campus, particularly with regard to well-being. 
 

Kayla MacGillivray

Kayla is one of the Peer Support Resource Centre’s Coordinators and is new to her role. Prior to this, Kayla used to be a Peer Support Volunteer. She is currently finishing up her Bachelor of Arts degree at Kwantlen, with a major in Psychology and a minor in Counselling. She hopes to one day become a clinical counsellor with a focus on helping those with complex trauma.

Health Canada CPAD Survey 

Health Canada, in collaboration with PEP-AH, is launching a survey in November 2019 to study alcohol, cannabis and drug use among Canadian undergraduate students. To learn more or to participate, please read the invitation letter below.

The Mental Health Commission of Canada, along with the CSA Group, has opened the PSS Standard for public review! The draft is available until November 6, 2019. To review the draft:

CACEE Webinar on Mental Health 

There is a volunteer opportunity by the Canadian Association of Career Educators and Employers (CACEE) to provide training to post secondary career specialists and educators on mental health. Volunteer(s) will be co-creating the webinar with Andrea Wilder, Health and Wellness Manager at BCIT. For more information or to volunteer, please contact Andrea at awilder@bcitsa.ca.

Community Action Initiative Funding 

Community Wellness & Harm Reduction Grants are available for municipalities 'who propose harm reduction projects or initiatives focused on a range of support services and strategies designed to enhance the knowledge, skills, resources and supports for individuals, families and communities to be safer, healthier and more inclusive.' This opportunity may be applicable for campus members who work with their local municipality on harm reduction.
