Kambarang is the season of birth. It is the time of the year when long dry periods are accompanied by a warming trend.1 Snakes and reptiles are starting to come out of hibernation and are looking for warmth to give them energy to search for food.2

Flowers in bloom this season include the Mooja (Australian Christmas Tree) with its bright orange and yellow flowers, along with some Banksias, Kangaroo Paws and Orchids.3

We are currently on the search for a Noongar, Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person to write an introductory segment about the Noongar 6 seasons and their significance to the area. If this is you or someone you know, we would love for you to get in touch.

Canning Sustainability Challenge

Crowdfunding a huge success

Three local teams who pitched their social impact ideas to the community have surpassed their crowdfunding targets, and as a result were each granted an additional $2,000 from the City to roll out their exciting local sustainability projects. Collectively, over $20,000 via community investment alone has been raised for the projects.

As part of the Canning Sustainability Challenge, these three projects will have long term social and community benefit in Canning and include:

  • Canning Fabric Heroes: installing a fabric bag swap station supported by local IGA supermarkets;
  • Hope for Her: ending period poverty and developing biodegradable sanitary pads;
  • Good Deed Movement: providing support to the homeless by running boot camp classes.

With the City’s pledge to pitch in an additional $2,000 to each project, the Canning Sustainability Challenge reaffirms the City’s commitment to building community capacity through new and innovative funding models.

Join the Trail

Put second hand first

City of Canning households, schools and community groups are set to join over 400,000 people across the country on Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 October as a part of the ninth annual Garage Sale Trail. A multi award-winning community and sustainability event, Garage Sale Trail is powered by over 140 local councils nation-wide.

It is expected that this year’s weekend long event will involve more Australians than ever before, who will choose to reuse at over 16,000 garage sale events to be held across the country. Across the weekend, residents are encouraged to put second hand first to reduce waste, the number of new products made and the overall impact of consumption on the planet.

Registrations to host a sale are free and open now for households, schools, community groups and individuals who are keen to declutter, make some money and have some fun.

2020 Waste Guide

Going digital
