SERVICE NEWS

MUR TARGET REQUIREMENTS FROM 1 OCTOBER

New targeting requirements apply to Medicines Use Review (MURs) conducted from 1 October 2019, so community pharmacy contractors will need to update their standard operating procedure for the service to reflect these changes. These changes were agreed as part of the five-year Community Pharmacy Contractual Framework agreement.

Seventy percent of MURs conducted from 1 October 2019 to 31 March 2020 must be within the following two target groups:

  • patients taking high-risk medicines; or
  • patients recently discharged from hospital who had changes made to their medicines while they were in hospital.

From 1 October 2019, patients with respiratory disease and patients at risk of or diagnosed with cardiovascular disease and regularly being prescribed at least four medicines are no longer target groups for MURs.

Between 1 April 2019 and 31 March 2020, contractors can undertake up to 250 MURs per pharmacy, but no more than 200 may be undertaken between 1 April 2019 and 30 September 2019

CYTOTOXIC SHARPS - DISPOSAL

In the last week the LPC have been asked by two contractors about cytotoxic sharps being returned to pharmacies and how to dispose of them.

Until recently cytotoxic injections were given in the patient’s home, by nurses who took the used syringes and needles away with them but there has been a recent change in disease management and patients are now self-administering injectable cytotoxic medicines. These patients need to dispose of these used needles and syringes properly.

All pharmacies in Wirral Council, Cheshire West and Chester and Cheshire East Council areas who are signed up to the sharps collection service can take these cytotoxic sharps from patients.

Sharpsmart provide pharmacies with 5L purple bins for cytotoxic medicines. The drivers carry 2.5L purple bins for cytotoxic sharps which them and will provide them to pharmacies if asked. If you need a purple cytotoxic sharps before your next collection please ring Sharpsmart on 01388 810310; they are aware that there may be increased requests for these from our local pharmacies.

If you are in Warrington Council area or not signed up to your local council sharps collection service, you need to advise the patient to contact their local council for collection of this sharps waste.

PHARMACY CONTRACTS AND MANAGEMENT

NHS COMMUNITY PHARMACIST CONSULTATION SERVICE (CPCS) - HAVE YOU REGISTERED?

If pharmacy contractors haven’t registered to provide the CPCS, they can do so and claim the Transition payment supplement (£900 if claimed by 1 December 2019), by completing the declaration on the NHSBSA Manage Your Service (MYS) portal.

The NHS Community Pharmacist Consultation Service (CPCS) will commence on 29 October 2019 and the Toolkit to support pharmacy teams to provide the service has just been published on the NHSBSA website.

The Toolkit has been developed by NHS England and NHS Improvement (NHSE&I), with input from the Urgent Care Delivery and Implementation Group (a group of NHS and community pharmacy experts set up by PSNC and NHSE&I to help implement the CPCS).

It contains two sections – the first is a short briefing on the service which is aimed at all pharmacy team members. The second section contains more detail on the service, so it can be used as a reference guide and pharmacists who will be providing the service will find it useful to read in full.

Download the CPCS Toolkit from the NHSBSA website

CPCW NEWS

CORRECTION: DENTAL PRESCRIPTIONS

Following our article last week, it has been brought to our attention that the information provided by the call centre was incorrect. The team have now been briefed.

The NHSBSA has confirmed that only amendments (ie the crossing out of one quantity and the addition of a new quantity) need to be countersigned; prescriptions with a handwritten quantity are not considered an amendment and would be reimbursed based on the prescribed quantity unless the endorsement is for a lesser quantity.

As a few other agencies picked up and circulated this news, PSNC have also produced an article which can be viewed on the link as follows: https://psnc.org.uk/our-news/contractor-notice-clarification-on-dental-prescription-reimbursement/
