Falcon Flight Looking to Connect with Faculty

The Falcon Flight Program, which is operated by Shelby County Schools and partners with the University, provides college-aged students with disabilities a chance to get a true college experience on the UM campus. Through the program, participants attend classes on an exploratory basis at UM and take part in other activities aimed at developing important job and life skills as they make the transition from high school to adulthood.

The program is looking for faculty who are interested in hosting Falcon Flight students in their classes. If you think your classroom would be a good fit with the program, contact the University’s Falcon Flight liaison, Sarah Hendren, at shendren@montevallo.edu.

Teachers’ Retirement System Annual Statements

Please note the University received this information from the Retirement Systems of Alabama (RSA) for employees who are members of the Teachers’ Retirement System.

Annual Statements should have been mailed in the previous week. If a member has “email” listed as their preferred method of contact, they will receive an email notifying them to log in to their Member Online Service account to view the statement. If the member has “mail” listed as their preferred method of contact, they will receive a printed copy of the statement. Members will need to utilize Member Online Services for future statements, as this is the last year RSA will mail statements.

Montevallo Astronomical Society and UM Astronomy Club

The Montevallo Astronomical Society and the UM Astronomy Club will meet several times this semester at the James Wylie Shepherd Observatory (JWSO), beginning Sept. 25. These events are community events and all visitors are welcome for an evening of celestial observing and good company.

Remaining fall observing dates: Oct. 2, Oct. 16 and Nov. 20

All dates are 7:30 to 9 p.m. and will be held provided it is not raining or overcast.

For those with GPS navigation systems, the physical address of the JWSO is 1093 Pebble Road, Montevallo, 35115. Gates will be open. Ignore the “No Trespassing” signs.

Directions to the JWSO: Following 119 South through Montevallo, turn right onto 10 West (Middle Street) for 1 mile, bearing right onto 17 North. After 0.3 miles, turn left onto 206 West, and after 0.4 miles, turn right onto Pebble Road, continuing 0.7 miles to the UM Gentry Springs property.

Access for All by Teayoun Kim-Kassor

The tangible doorknobs without doors, the visual description of non-tangible ropes and the use of fragile paraffin mold vs. metal screws create a paradoxical and contradictory statement. The purpose of the project is to enhance an awareness and better understanding of the different processes involved in our social and cultural context of the identity question. The artist’s hope is to trigger the larger audience by allowing them a reflective moment, which will direct them expectantly toward retracing their own history and by leading them to question “what is reality” and “what defines us.”

Faculty Sabbatical Leave

The Faculty Development Advisory Committee (FDAC) is accepting applications for sabbatical leave. Sabbatical leave provides faculty with opportunities for professional development, scholarly pursuits and professional and intellectual renewal. The deadline for submission for Fall 2020 or Spring 2021 leave is 5 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 27. More information about sabbatical leave and a link to the application form can be found on the FDAC webpage. Questions may be directed to FDAC co-chairs Dr. Ray Ozley and Dr. Heather Tinsley. Please note, a cover sheet containing signatures of the Department Chair and College Dean is required for submission.

Natasha Deon Book Reading

The BACHE Visiting Writers’ Series will welcome novelist Natasha Deon to campus on Monday, Sept. 30, at 3:30 p.m. Deon is the author of Grace, a multi-generational novel about enslaved women that Bookish calls “a violent but important story about mothers and daughters and a dark chapter in American history.” The reading will be held in the Pat Scales Special Collection Room in Carmichael Library. UM Green Fund Call for Proposals

Did you know that the University of Montevallo was the first college in Alabama to have a green fund? The UM Green Fund is a pool of money used to provide grants for campus projects that improve sustainability, decrease our ecological footprint and educate the University and local communities about sustainable practices, environmental issues and caring for the planet. The Green Fund has $30,000 available! Any member of the UM community, including students and student groups, can write a Green Fund grant proposal.

Application guidelines are available by request. Contact Dr. Susan Caplow for more information. All proposals are due by Tuesday, Oct. 1.

Training for Student Employees

The Career Development Center and the Office of Student Employment will be providing professional development training for UM’s student employees on Wednesday, Oct. 2, at 3:30 p.m. in Wills 200. All student employees will benefit from the training, but those requiring office etiquette and telephone skills are highly encouraged to attend. The time spent in the training session will be considered time worked and compensable. Please email Mark Bolton to register your student employee(s) for this training opportunity.

October Professional Photo Days

University Marketing & Communications is pleased to offer Professional Photo Days. Each month, the University photographer will have two designated mornings available for professional headshots. Anyone on campus is welcome to participate — faculty, staff or students. There is no charge. University of Montevallo to host ACT Prep Course

The University of Montevallo will be hosting a single-day ACT Prep Course for high school sophomores, juniors and seniors on Saturday, Oct. 5, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The $110 single-day course covers all ACT test subjects with in-class practice testing and includes lunch and a snack. Each participant will also receive a copy of the official ACT Prep book, a math review card and other resources. Department of Theatre Presents The Weir

The Weir details a group of men who gather in a small pub in rural Ireland for their nightly ritual of drinking and telling ghost stories; which is interrupted by a stranger with a haunting tale of her own that has unexpected consequences.

Faculty/Staff Highlights

Dr. John Bawden’s “Latin American Soldiers: Armed Forces in the Region’s History” was recently published by Routledge. In the book, Bawden introduces readers to the study of armed forces in Latin American history through vivid narratives about four very different countries: Mexico, Cuba, Brazil and Chile. Designed as an introductory text for undergraduates, “Latin American Soldiers” identifies major concepts, factors and trends that have shaped modern Latin America.  
 
Dr. Ted Hoffman, associate professor and director of Music Education, presented two research posters and a featured practices, programs and issues session at the 2019 Society for Music Teacher Education Symposium held Oct. 11-14 in Greensboro, North Carolina. Conference invitees included more than 300 music teacher education faculty from colleges and universities throughout the U.S. and Canada. Hoffman was the only music teacher educator from the state of Alabama accepted for the presentation.
 
Dr. Brittney Patterson and Dr. Eun-Hee Park, both assistant professors of music, performed at A Little Lunch Music series at the Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art at Auburn University on Sept. 12. In addition, Patterson and Park performed a flute-piano duo recital at Alabama Piano Gallery on Sept. 14.
 
Psychology professor Dr. Elizabeth Richardson and students Asia Wiggins and Ashley Buckingham presented their research on psychological factors affecting pain outcomes at the Southern Pain Society’s Annual Conference held Sept. 13-15 in New Orleans. The conference was an interdisciplinary conference comprised of physicians, psychologists, social workers and other allied health professionals with the mission to provide better care for those living with chronic pain.
 
Chartwells Higher Education/Falcon Foods is excited to announce that Regan Taylor has been promoted to the role of assistant director of Dining Services. Taylor will continue to serve as the campus catering director and will assume additional roles in residential dining hall management and will manage the new food venue in the Center for the Arts when it opens this spring. Student Highlights

Nemanja Acimovic received Gulf South Conference weekly honors from the conference office this week. Acimovic was named the GSC Player of the Week for his play against Palm Beach Atlantic and Christian Brothers. The forward led the Falcons’ offensive attack, scoring three goals in a 4-0 win over Christian Brothers. The Belgrade, Serbia, native added five shots, including one on goal, in the 1-0 loss to Palm Beach Atlantic.
 
Annie Mason received Gulf South Conference weekly honors from the conference office this week. Mason was named the GSC Co-Defender of the Week for her play against St. Leo and Tampa. The goalkeeper led the Falcons for 200 minutes in goal. She totaled nine saves in a double overtime, 1-1 tie against St. Leo. Mason also registered six saves in a 3-0 shutout win over Tampa. Mason has totaled 22 saves and two shutouts this season, while only allowing one goal. Mason leads the GSC with a .957 save percentage. This is the second GSC weekly award for Mason this season.
