OUR CONNECTIONS CLASS
All are Welcome!
So many thanks to our UUFB community...
...for supporting the 2019 Beaufort Walk For Water this past Saturday, September 21st. The UUA, the UUSC, and the United Nations all consider water to be a human right. Yet, millions of people don't have access to clean, potable water in their communities. Water Mission the non-profit that sponsors the Walk for Water is one group that is trying to do something about this, by providing simple water filtration systems to communities where none exist.
UUFB and your Social and Environmental Justice Team were among the sponsors of this year's walk for the third year in a row with our donation of $500. We raised an additional $700 with individual donations from our generous community. We are so very grateful to be a part of this opportunity to make a difference and to be a part of a community that cares!
There is more we can all do! I encourage us all to learn about the growing privatization of water across the globe and to do what we can to insist that our municipalities keep tap water clean and safe. Then I urge us all to consider avoiding one-use plastic water bottles whenever we possibly can. It takes more water to create those bottles than they contain, and of course most of the plastic ends up in landfills or our precious oceans.
Plastic takes a very long time to break down in the environment and when it does break down into micro particles, it is getting into our food chain, our water supply, and our bodies. Less plastic is always more. It has taken me a long time to develop the good habit of keeping a reusable water bottle at my side, and still at times, I forget, but it feels so very good when I fill up my bottle each morning to think that I am helping in some small way. I hope you will join me!”

CHRISTIAN AFFINITY GROUP
ANNUAL PLANNING MEETING
Come one come all to the UUFB Christian Affinity Group planning meeting for the coming year. We will meet on Sunday, October 6 after the coffee hour.
Last year the group’s program theme was Rebels and Reformers and focused on important people of faith who made a lasting spiritual impact on both Christians and non-Christians alike. We are open to all ideas and hope that members and friends of UUFB can join us to plan another meaningful year. For more information contact Barbara James.
Habitat for Humanity Faith Build Project Update
UUFB is partnered with other Beaufort area faith groups on the LowCountry Habitat for Humanity Faith Build House, located at 2523 Mossy Oaks Road. The house’s exterior is now in place, so the remaining volunteer work is ground-level and mostly indoors. The nature of the work will continue to change as the build progresses towards its targeted completion date in October.
In order to participate, volunteers from any participating faith group,
sign up directly on the LowCountry Habitat for Humanity site, in any combination, up to a limit of ten. Those who have completed the 1-hour orientation can sign up for any Tuesday through Saturday they wish. We at UUFB have identified all Thursdays from 8 to noon as our common workday. Working together will be a great opportunity to act on our values, to build relationship among our own members and friends, and with others in a no-proselytizing interfaith experience.
Those who are interested, and have not yet completed a 1-hour orientation program may attend one on the second Saturday of any month, at the Habitat office (616 Parris Island Gateway). Please call Lee McSavaney 843-522-3500 at the Habitat office to attend.
Any questions? Contact Tom Hlaban.
Religious Education A La Carte
Welcome to UUFB’s best kept secret¬—Religious Education A La Carte. The secret? What Happens In the Classroom during Sunday Service. A La Carte? Because the menu has many options. The children, the lessons, the teachers change frequently. All ages are welcome at UUFB. The infants and toddlers gather in the nursery in the sanctuary building. When you hear that cheerful chatter, remember these babes are our future. Occasionally adults are needed in the nursery, so let us know if you love the little ones.
Over in the Fellowship Hall Building, in our one classroom, the 5-12 year old children gather for Religious Education (RE) with two adults, a teacher and an assistant. After the congregation sings us out of the Service, the children gather for their own lesson with a Chalice Lighting, Opening Words and Get the Wiggles Out. This Fall the Lessons are focused on Visions, new beginnings, expectations, past and present UU Leaders contributions to our program as well as spiritual leaders in our world. In future months the Soul Matters program topics will include Belonging and Attention to Self and Others. Two adults are present in the classroom each week. Again, assistants are welcome!
Our children are inquisitive, expressive, questioning and caring. With the range of ages, they are supportive of one another, being helpful and sensitive. Their interests range from soccer to art to dance to science. The children and the teachers are learning from one another.
There is an opening for You the leaders and role models of UUFB to share your story. Whether you have an interest, a career or mission to share with our children you are welcome. You are the best resources available to the RE program. Each class lasts about 40 minutes, so your lesson will have time for presentation, questions and discussion. Games are another activity the children love, so bring your favorites to share. Your personal experience stimulates the children’s curiosity about the world around them. Join the A La Carte Menu for RE.
Call Deena Culp to offer your assistance or presentation to the children. Deena’s contact information is in the online directory, or leave a message at the office with Rev. Lori. Religious Education classes meet nine months a year. Ten volunteers are needed to rotate the schedule as teacher or assistant, this is a commitment to once a month. Thanks to the many volunteers that have worked with UUFB Religious Education program over the past 20 years. If you have taken time off from RE, maybe it’s now time to revisit us.
