Lewis & Clark receives $3.7M gift for Environmental Law
We are pleased to announce that Lewis & Clark Law School received a charitable bequest totaling $3.7 million to support public interest environmental law. The bequest, from Washington environmental activist John E. Diehl, is the second-largest single gift ever made to the law school.
The bequest supports scholarships and post graduate employment in environmental law for Lewis & Clark law students.

Lewis & Clark launches LLM in Environmental, Natural Resources, & Energy Law via distance learning; Environmental Law, Energy Law, Natural Resource Law and Science, and Water Law all offered online this year.

The online LLM in Environmental, Natural Resources, and Energy Law builds on the law school’s internationally recognized post-JD environmental law Master’s program, and is specifically designed for attorneys who want to more effectively practice environmental law. Our fall cohort has launched, and we welcome applications to start spring semester in January 2020.

Professor Lisa Benjamin, the newest faculty member of Lewis & Clark Law School’s Environmental, Natural Resources, and Energy Law Program, has been appointed to be a member of the Compliance Committee of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), for a three-year term from 2019-2021.
A globally recognized expert and scholar in energy, climate change, corporate law, and the intersections between them, Professor Benjamin was nominated by the Latin American and Caribbean region at the Conference of the Parties meeting in December 2018.
Benjamin is teaching International Climate Change Law, Energy Law and Environmental Justice.

Professor Erica Lyman is new Director of Lewis & Clark's International Environmental Law Project.
Professor Erica Lyman (’05) will lead Lewis and Clark's International Environmental Law Project (IELP) as of September 1, 2019. Professor Chris Wold, who founded IELP in 1994, and served as its director until now, will continue to be involved while transitioning to a larger classroom role.
As a staff attorney for IELP, Lyman has worked to promote consideration of climate change on World Heritage sites; served as a legal advisor for Palau and the Maldives during the climate change negotiations, including during the adoption of the Paris Agreement; crafted the legal arguments that eventually ended Japanese high seas whaling; and is currently working in 15 African countries on evaluating and drafting legislation to combat wildlife trafficking.
Lyman plans to continue to bring a wide range of international wildlife law cases and projects to the clinic, as well as support the growth of the clinic’s focus into additional areas of law.

On October 18, Lewis and Clark Law and the Columbia River Inter-Tribal Fish Commission (CRITFC) will hold a symposium commemorating the 50th anniversary of Judge Robert Belloni’s landmark decision that interpreted the Columbia River tribes’ treaty fishing rights to ensure that the tribes were able to harvest “a fair share” of Columbia River salmon runs. To achieve this fair share, Judge Belloni called for the tribes to “participate meaningfully” in fishery management, the first judicial recognition of the importance of tribal sovereign control of their reserved natural resources. The court’s recognition of tribal sovereignty led to several generations of co-management plans governing Columbia River salmon harvests as well as hatchery management.
The symposium will feature tribal and governmental attorneys considering the implications of the case now known as United States v. Oregon, including its effect on the health of the salmon runs, the negotiation and renegotiation of international treaties, and even the formation of CRITFC itself.
