Summer in Review - Not in Session But the Work Continues

As we move into fall, I am reflecting on a busy summer and looking forward to the work ahead. In the coming months, we will wrap up our interim committee work and start finalizing ideas for legislation to be introduced when we convene for the 2020 legislative session in January. Read below for some highlights from the summer, what I've been working on, and more!

BIG NEWS on Lower Health Insurance Prices!
Over the summer, we have made some huge progress implementing several of the bills that were passed this session concerning lower health insurance prices.

Reinsurance Gets Federal Approval
Thanks to a bill I co-sponsored, a state reinsurance program will go into effect on January 1, 2020. That means that individual market premiums in Eagle and Routt Counties will
go down by 29.1% - an average $748 in monthly savings for a family of four and close to $9000 a year in savings!

$100 per month insulin co-pay cap to go into effect on January 1st
My bill to cap monthly co-pays for insulin at $100 a month for insured Coloradans (down from $600-1000) is set to take effect on January 1, 2020 and a recent analysis shows it will not increase insurance premiums for anyone. Colorado was the first state in the nation to pass this law and now over two-dozen other states are set to take up a similar version of my legislation.

First Health Insurance Co-Op Launches in Summit County - Signs it will spread to other communities thanks to Donovan-Roberts-McCluskie Law

The PEAK Health Alliance, a first-in-the-state health insurance co-op just launched in Summit County and will offer plans that are 41-49% cheaper than individual market plans. This unique model is looking to be replicated in Eagle County, Routt County, and elsewhere thanks to a law I passed with Sen. Donovan and Rep. McCluskie that will allow co-ops to form more efficiently and effectively across the state.

What Else is Going On?

Interim Committee Work:
There are two committees on which I am serving during this interim period. First, I am the Chair of the Capital Development Committee. This is the committee that has jurisdiction over all state property, including universities, prisons, state parks, historical landmarks, and more. We have already started our travel across the state to visit recently-funded projects and sites that are requesting funds. Our first trip took place in mid-June when we visited the Western Slope and our second trip occurred in early September when we visited Northern and Northeastern Colorado. Next up: Southern and Southeastern Colorado.

Second, I am the Vice-Chair of the Water Resources Review Committee which studies and manages water issues across the state. We started our committee work with a two-day tour of the Lower South Platte River Basin and then continued with a public committee hearing at the Colorado Water Congress Summer Conference in Steamboat. Now, we transition to the Capitol where we held committee hearings in mid-September and will finish our work and vote on bills for the 2020 session at our final meetings in October.

Preparing for Next Session
I have already met with several constituents at my post-session town hall meetings and individually who have approached me with ideas for next session. Have an idea yourself? I am always open to ideas and welcome you to contact me anytime to discuss.
