Opening October 19, 2019 in Manning Hall
Yvonne Mullock’s new work, Gift-Love is a unique, textile sculpture which will impress the viewer with its scale and subtext. This installation uses utopic fashion principles to explore ideas of intimacy, touch, care and connection through textiles. The glove is a monumental token of the artist’s affection meant for loved ones and strangers alike. Gloves were once given as gifts to lovers as pledges of affection and devotion because as a gift, the glove protects, warms and comforts even when your loved one is absent.
Gift-Love takes its name from this bygone poetic custom. Made from sumptuous fabric, the glove/hand references the artist’s hand, the primary tool she used to construct it. Not only is this a playful reminder of the author as maker, but also serves as a powerful symbol of devotion and healing.

Widely recognized as the pre-eminent prize for Canadian artists 40 and under, the Sobey Art Award continues to attract national and international attention. Presented annually, the prize celebrates some of this country’s most exciting young artists — most of whom go on to artistic careers of considerable renown — while also providing significant financial recognition.
On view for the first time at the Art Gallery of Alberta, the Sobey Art Award Exhibition features works by this year’s five shortlisted artists: Stephanie Comilang, Nicolas Grenier, Kablusiak, Anne Low and D’Arcy Wilson. Certain to fascinate, challenge and inspire, this group exhibition offers visitors an opportunity to experience the best and brightest in Canadian contemporary art.
The winner of the 2019 Sobey Art Award will be announced at the Art Gallery of Alberta on November 15 in a private event.

Processor: Analogue and Digital Retranslations
The artists included in Processor explore the translations and negotiations between the virtual and the physical. These artists defy the current power shift from material culture to media culture and blend the virtual disembodied experience with one that is embodied and blurs the lines of what is “real.” Melding analogue and digital in various and novel ways, the artists use these translations and retranslations as metaphor for various things, including Indigenous sovereignty, living with mental illness, reworking histories and addressing stereotypes, and the ethics of data collection and immigration.

Lisa Lipton: Soon All Your Memories Will Be With Me
Soon All Your Memories Will Be With Me is Lisa Lipton’s latest exploration into Cordwainer Bird’s 1973 Canadian-produced science fiction series The Starlost. In this iteration, the artist has created a new section aboard the spaceship Ultimo—a place for deep contemplation. This biosphere contains a sculpture housing two lumia compositions that display the movement of abstract light patterns. The rhythmic flow of light and colour encourages focused viewing and provides a window into interstellar cosmic landscapes. Catch this exhibition before it blasts off on October 20.

Join us for an exciting series of Indigenous-language films at the AGA this October. Over the course of three weeks, you’ll see a range of acclaimed Indigenous language films all produced in Canada.

Gaawaay K’uuna (Edge of the Knife) (2018) takes place at Haida Gwaii in the 1800s. At a seasonal fishing camp two families endure conflict between the nobleman Adiits’ii (Tyler York) and his best friend Kwa (William Russ). After Adiits’ii causes the accidental death of Kwa’s son, he flees into the rainforest, descending into madness and transforming into Gaagiixid – “the Wildman.” When the families return in the spring, they discover Adiits’ii has survived the winter. Can he be rescued and returned to his humanity? Meanwhile, Kwa wrestles with his deepest desire – revenge.

Tia and Piujuq (2018) Summer moves slowly for Tia (Tia Bshara), a 10-year-old Syrian girl who has recently moved to Montreal with her parents, as she struggles to make new friends. When she finds a magic portal that transports her to the arctic tundra, she befriends Piujuq (Nuvvija Tulugarjuk), an Inuk girl of her age, and they immerse themselves in a world of Inuit myth and magic.

Atanarjuat: The Fast Runner (2001) Natar Ungalaaq stars as Atanarjuat, a young man who falls in love with the beautiful Atuat (Sylvia Ivalu), who is promised to Oki (Peter-Henry Arnatsiaq), the boastful son of the camp leader. Nevertheless, Atanarjuat continues to pursue his true love, inciting a violent retaliation by his adversary. When Oki enacts his vengeance, Atanarjuat escapes, fleeing naked across the frozen surface of the sea in an indelible dreamlike sequence. Atanarjuat: The Fast Runner is based on an ancient Inuit legend that was kept alive by oral history to warn us of the dangers of putting the individual before the collective.

As the world becomes more globalized, how has our relationship to the land evolved? For this month’s Art for Lunch, Gallery Attendant Alaynee Goodwill-Littlechild invites us to reflect on how cultural identities can survive, adapt and flourish in contemporary spaces? Focusing on media and technology, and their impact on traditional practices, together we will look at how we can create new forms of gathering places.
Alaynee will facilitate a conversation around the current exhibition Isuma: One Day in the Life of Noah Piugattuk and share her experience as a traditional artist, teacher and a contemporary urban Dakota/Lakota woman.
