2020-21 Middle School Attendance Areas Update
Beginning in the 2020-21 school year, our district will have new attendance areas for East Middle School and West Middle School. The current attendance areas for our middle schools (former junior highs) have been in place since the 2011-12 school year. The three elementary schools with the most students (Eagle Creek, Jackson & Sweeney) primarily feed into West Middle School. The two smaller elementary schools (Red Oak & Sun Path) primarily feed into East Middle School. For reference, Red Oak and Sun Path were the two largest elementary schools when these attendance areas were originally drawn.
Growth patterns within the district over the last nine years have led to a growing difference in the number of students at each of our middle schools. The student count difference between East and West is currently 427 students and projected at more than 400 into the future if attendance areas stay the same.
West Middle School is more than 100 students over capacity. East Middle School is about 300 students below capacity. The difference in size of each school presents some challenges in the way our schools operate including: pressure on common areas, challenges in the teaming structure for teachers, core staffing, and the ability to allow transfers between schools. New attendance areas will balance enrollment at the middle school level, while also allowing us to plan for future growth.
District administration presented 2020-21 Middle School Attendance Areas samples and a timeline to the Shakopee School Board at the meeting. The samples are a way to provide the board with examples of how the information will be presented at a later date in October.
Possible scenarios/proposals for middle school attendance areas have not been presented. They will be presented at the October 14 school board work session. At this point, there are no proposals on the table.

Certification of Preliminary Levy 2019 Payable 2020
The Shakopee School Board passed a resolution setting the preliminary tax levy for 2019 payable 2020; an increase of 2.095% over the previous year. The following are included in the levy:
- Voter-approved levies (operating referendum, capital projects and building bond)
- Discretionary levies (long-term maintenance facilities, safe schools, and building lease)
- School district funds (General Fund, Community Education Fund and the Debt Service Fund)
“It is important for our organization to be extremely prudent when managing resources directed to us from the taxpayers in the community,” said Superintendent Mike Redmond. “This year’s modest levy increase is an example of sound financial management and prudent decision-making.”
The Shakopee School Board will hold its Truth in Taxation hearing on December 9, 2019 at the District Office at 6 p.m.
