Dear Naffziger Members,
It is my great pleasure, as President of the UCSF Naffziger Surgical Society for 2018-2019, to invite you to attend our third annual Naffziger Surgical Society Day on September 27, 2019.
Loupes Ceremony
In celebration of our relationship with the UCSF Department of Surgery trainees and Department Chair Dr. Julie Ann Sosa, we will be sponsoring the Loupes Ceremony for the first time, and it will serve as the kick-off event for our annual Naffziger Surgical Society Day! Each year the rising PGY-2's receive their loupes at a special ceremony attended by the entire Department of Surgery. In this department tradition, which has been in place for 15 years, each resident is gifted loupes in honor of a prior graduate of the general surgery residency. Starting this year, we are honoring several alumni who will also be giving talks about a variety of topics during the remainder of the day. We plan to make this an annual tradition so that current trainees will be able to remember those that went before them!

About the Honorees
Jade Hiramoto, MD
Dr. Hiramoto received her bachelor’s degree from UCLA and completed medical school at UCSF before going on to general surgery residency followed by Interventional Radiology and Vascular Surgery fellowships also all at UCSF. She has remained on faculty at UCSF since completing fellowship and her research interests include both clinical and translational projects, especially aimed at understanding the abnormal inflammatory response and kidney injury after complex endovascular aortic procedures.
Jasleen Kukreja, MD, MPH
Dr. Kukreja emigrated from India to the US in 1986 with a Master’s Degree in molecular biology and biochemistry. She went on to get a second bachelor’s degree from UC Irvine, complete medical school at UCLA and general surgery residency at the Brigham. She was the first woman to graduate from the Cardiothoracic Surgery Fellowship at UCSF, where she remained as faculty. She has been a pioneer in minimally invasive lung resections, lung transplant and ECMO.
Ginny Litle, MD
Dr. Little is a professor of surgery and chief of the division of thoracic surgery at Boston Medical Center. She completed her general surgery residency at UCSF, followed by fellowships in surgical oncology, cardiothoracic surgery, and minimally invasive thoracic surgery at the University of Pittsburgh. Her research interests include VTE risk reduction in thoracic surgery, Barrett's esophagus screening with cytosponge, simulation training for students and residents, and microRNA profiling of lung cancer.
Tim Nelson, MD
Dr. Nelson is a professor of surgery and the chief of general surgery at the University of New Mexico. He attended medical school at UCLA and completed his general surgery residency and fellowship at UCSF. He is currently the general surgery program director, vice chair of education, and the executive medical director for inpatient services. He has been the chair of the Advisory Council for General Surgery of the ACS, and also serves on the executive committee of the Association of Program Directors in Surgery and as state councilor for the Southwestern Surgical Congress.
Ryutaro Hirose, MD
Dr. Hirose completed undergraduate and medical school at Columbia before coming to UCSF for general surgery residency. After residency he completed his fellowship in Abdominal Transplantation also at UCSF and has remained on as faculty since that time. His research interests include renal and hepatic ischemia reperfusion injury as well as quality improvement and improved organ allocation. He also serves as the Associate Program Director for the General Surgery Residency at UCSF.
Edward P. Chen, MD
Dr. Chen completed medical school at Duke and went on to general surgery residency at UCSF. He completed Cardiothoracic Surgery Fellowship at Emory followed by a fellowship in Aortic Surgery at the University of Texas, Houstan and returned to Emory as a faculty member. He is widely acknowledged for his innovative work in circulatory management and cerebral protection in aortic arch procedures.
Nora Jaskowiak, MD
Dr. Jaskowiak completed medical school at Harvard, general surgery residency at UCSF and went on to complete fellowship in Surgical Oncology at the University of Chicago. She remains there as a faculty member and is the head of the Breast Center. Her research focuses on investigating how blocking the action of vascular endothelial cell growth factor can dramatically increase the anti-tumor effects of radiation therapy.
Carlos U. Corvera, MD
Dr. Corvera completed his BS in Biochemisty at UC Davis and medical school at UC San Diego. He completed general surgery residency at UCSF and went on to complete both a Surgical Oncology as well as a Hepatobiliary fellowship at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. He returned to UCSF where he has remained on faculty and is now Chief of the Division of Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery. He is widely regarded as a pioneer and innovator in minimally invasive liver resection and complex oncologist resections.

About the Honorees
James P. Anthony, MD
Dr. Anthony is a plastic and reconstructive surgeon in San Francisco. He received his medical degree from Stony Brook University. He completed his general surgery residency at Cornell and his plastic surgery residency at UCSF. Dr. Anthony is board certified in plastic surgery by the American Board of Plastic Surgery.
Brent Moelleken, MD
Dr. Moelleken is a plastic and reconstructive surgeon practicing in Beverly Hills and Santa Barbara. Double board certified, he received his training at Harvard University, Yale University, UCSF and UCLA. Dr. Moelleken is one of three specialty-trained surgeons in the world to complete the yearlong Aesthetic Surgery Fellowship at UCLA.
Richard F. Grossman, MD
Dr. Grossman is a plastic and reconstructive surgeon in San Francisco. He is an Advanced Burn Life Support provider and instructor. He specializes in cosmetic and reconstructive surgery. Prior to training in plastic surgery at UCSF, Dr. Grossman completed a full five-year residency in general surgery, also at UCSF and was certified by the American Board of Surgery.
Naffziger Surgical Society Day
The symposium will consist of a series of thought- provoking talks by all of our Loupes Honorees and Dr. Sareh Parengi, current president of American Women Surgeons. We will also have an update on the state of the Department of Surgery by Dr. Julie Ann Sosa.
We will also have a short tribute by Naffziger members to pay tribute to Dr. Robert Allen, Dr. Thomas Hunt, and Dr. Donald Trunkey who we have lost in the past year.
It is our hope that this new tradition will bring the Naffziger Society and the Department of Surgery closer together, and that we will be able to engage more of our alumni across the country to celebrate our common lineage as graduates of the UCSF Department of Surgery. The Naffziger Surgical Society Day is meant to be an informative symposium and a unique opportunity to catch up with your mentors, fellow residents, as well as current faculty and trainees.
