Come join us for a fun evening, Tuesday, November 27th, 6pm-9pm at Revolve Consignment in Issaquah to shop for your dazzling outfit to wear to our annual Holiday & Awards Party.

Terri Thorne will have lots of beautiful and affordable outfits to choose from. We are also excited to have these professionals available to share their expertise and help with the fun: Lisa Fischer of Lisa Fischer Styling, Carole Weeks of Carole Weeks jewelry, Jennifer Mager with Beauty Counter, and hair styling by Mary Barry. Delicious appetizers will be provided by our very own Angela Belli of Bellangela Italian Cuisine, and wine sampling provided by Kathy McDonald with Hope Wine. Kathy is one of our monthly members and I’m excited she joined in to be one of the providers of goods and services for our event. You should join us… it’s a lot of fun.

Then at 7 pm, we will go FB live on the Illuminating Women LLC, FB page to announce who has been nominated for our 4 award categories: Woman who Empowers, Woman who Educates, Woman who Encourages, and Illuminating Woman of the Year. This fun-packed evening is a girlfriend shopping delight with perfectly aligned stations of ideas to help you glitter and shine for our Holiday Party and other special celebrations you want to illuminate.

No need to register, just fill the car with your girlfriends and join us.

Conquer Peru – Awamaki Feature

At Conquer Peru, we love connecting travelers with local businesses and organizations that make a difference. One of these amazing organizations that we will visit in Ollantaytambo is Awamaki, a nonprofit that empowers Peruvian women and girls to be financially independent by helping them start and run their own businesses.

What’s great about Awamaki, which means “handmade” in Quechua, is its goal to create a lasting impact – the nonprofit helps women provide for their families and improve their well-beings without being dependent on anyone organization. The decade-old program has connected 170 women who live in the rural villages outside Cusco to global markets. These artisans weave, knit, spin and sew while gaining additional training in quality control, product development and technical skills improvement from Awamaki. This could be by learning color combination and fiber selection, for example. Awamaki also invests in the women’s skills and leadership, providing training in client cultivation, banking and more.

The result is a variety of gorgeous and unique handcrafted artisan pieces, from bags woven from non-toxic dyed wool to gloves knitted from hand-spun alpaca fleece that can be bought at the local fair-trade store or internationally online. And with Awamaki, consumers know the women behind the products and how these products are made. During our visit, Awamaki will connect us with these amazing women and their stories, as well as their culture and communities.

Beyond the fair-trade artisan cooperative, Awamaki also runs a sustainable tourism program and a Language Centre, where visitors can take Quechua and Spanish lessons from locals.

“I founded Awamaki in the belief that income in the hands of women is the best way to lift communities out of poverty,” said Seattleite Kennedy Leavens, the founder and executive director of Awamaki, on the nonprofit’s website. “Awamaki gives women in remote places access to the modern economy so that they can invest in their children, homes and communities as they see fit.”
