September 2019 Newsletter

So much has happened this month - this will only be a small, small sample. Aviators, please read the Aviator Notes at the end.

Recent Newsletters:

Blog: Hurricane Dorian Relief Missions to the Bahamas

This month we highlight one of our member's efforts to bring relief to the Bahamas following Hurricane Dorian. The recovery efforts are still underway and we encourage you to learn more about this mission and the ways you can help. Major thanks to Ted for the excellent Blog Post.

See the coverage from local digital news reporter and Claire Going.
Claire partnered with Savannah Aviation to tell the story of their missions to the Bahamas taking much needed supplies. SavAv continues to ferry supplies to the devastated area.

 That New Airplane Smell...Well...Almost.

This month we welcomed Eric as an Aviator and gladly handed over keys so he could start his airplane ownership journey. Eric, thank you for believing in the vision of the club, always being proactive, asking for help and committing yourself to growth as a pilot.

Here we see Eric on short final to KSAV. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't jealous of his buttery-smooth landing.

Zero Five Tango is Going the Distance

This month, we have flown 33.7.1/27.47 safe Hobbs/Tach hrs. - busy bee!
This included a trip with a brand new baby, a dog to bite its owner when he turned off the very sophisticated heading hold autopilot and, a few days away from home dodging Dorian.
Lady the dog and her new ride. Thanks to new Aviator Brandon for bringing this bundle of cuteness into the mix. We're obsessed. Brandon brings lots of flight time and airplane building experience (Vans RV-7 under construction).

Playing in The Moonlight

I have no idea how I managed to get this photo on my cell phone but I did - enjoy this beautiful view on my way to KSSI at around 6,000 ft. We got to Southern Soul BBQ 10 minutes before close but hey...they were really nice about it.

Blog: ...Can I have my airplane back...please?

It's incredible what you can learn from your community - friend and Enthusiast member James took the time to tell us about his avionics upgrade experience as we begin looking into avionics upgrades for N4405T. (Yes, Sponsors are Welcome...I have a lovely place for your Company's logo or your personal signature on the side of our bird - thanks in advance). Check out the Blog Post.

Maintenance Activities

  • N4405T continues to perform well - no major squawks. Aviators may track squawks in our Flight Circle application.
  • Gene's performing an oil change on 9/26 - we've been working this bird hard and she deserves new fluids.
  • Dan added shrink wrap to the tow bar to significantly reduce the metal on metal rattling noise during taxi. Much welcomed fix - night and day difference on the ground.
  • Nose strut was serviced and now shows acceptable chrome.
  • Welcome Jason to the MX Team. He's a capable A&P and will continue to keep our airplane(s) healthy, happy and safe.
  • Remember to continue cleaning the windshield, spinner, cowling and leading edges after flights - airplane looks great!
  • Who wants to organize a wash and wax day?
  • Keep those squawks coming when necessary. Within your legal personal abilities, (Pilot, A&P...) feel free to assist with MX and squawks.
  • Contact hostesscityaviators@gmail.com to coordinate efforts with our MX Team (Dan, Jason & Gene).
A bunch of misfits if you asked me.

This day, Anthony and I took a quick spin over Savannah right after work and brought the bird back for Dan and Eric to do some night landings at KJYL.
Anthony (pictured) is excited to begin flight training so we're doing our best to get him absolutely hooked. This enthusiast will have his wings in no time and maybe we can play some small role.

Safety Corner: Minimum Maneuvering Speed in G.A.?

Challenging the Norm.

This video has already changed the way I fly. I hope it does the same for you. Thank you to Dan Gryder and FlightChops for this excellent production.

Club Roster - It's Getting LONG

I'll no longer be publishing a hard club roster - the list is becoming entirely too long. I'll attempt to add member first names and last initials to our website.

Join as an Enthusiast to gain access to our schedule, share flights with Aviators, access special deals and more. Enthusiast memberships are free! Applications on the website. Name missing? Please email us!

Current Airplane Owner? Join as an Enthusiast and we'll send you a sticker, t-shirt, and display your airplane on our website. We'll attend Fly-Ins as a club and you may share some of our resources and expertise. Your airplane will NOT be shared/leased to the club but, you may offer to share rides with other members to educate and inspire (and potentially split costs). Want to lease or sell? Send us an email.

Any member may nominate a new member. Aviators must be of good character and agree to the by-laws and operations of the Hostess City Aviators, Inc. We will cap Aviator membership to 10 pilots initially (1 spot available at the time this newsletter was written), with a max of 15 allowed by our insurance policy.

Teaching the Boy Scout Merit Badge

I volunteered to help to teach the Aviation Merit Badge to a unit of Boy Scouts on October 19 as a counselor alongside Enthusiast member Laure! Let us know if you have any interesting stories I can share or training material to take. Interested in coming along that morning? Let me know!

More Clubs. More People. More Planes. More Fun.

We have been creating material to share the equity club experience with three different groups of people (two nearby, one in Oklahoma). Standby for more in these developments.
Airport Badges

Jawanza is an AOA Signatory at the Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport for the Hostess City Aviators, Inc.
Members with an existing AOA badge (via Signature or otherwise) are not required to file for a new HCA AOA badge. If you require airport access badge, have lost your HCA issued badge or, have life changes that affect the badge's applicability, please contact hostesscityaviators@gmail.com.
We have an agreement with KORE that provides a 10% discount for our club members and a 5% commission for the club. Use This Link to receive the discount on your next KORE purchase:

Aviator Notes

  • We've settled on the idea of installing the Garmin GNX 375. Financing: most popular option is to have every Aviator pay $1,000 up front to help fun the install and "fly off" the value in the future. We'll stick to this plan unless there are any major concerns. Thing to keep eyes on: maintaining a healthy MX budget after paying up front. A pending deal on a better equipped airplane may or may not change these plans slightly. Give me some time to work it all out.
  • Reminder: You're an Equity Owner! You have lots of power but also share lots of the responsibilities! Let's all help each other as best we can.
  • Reminder: You're billed by Tach time - FlightCircle bills on Hobbs time and I go in and manually correct the number at the end of the month. No need to rush the checklists or redline the engine to get there faster. Money as a function of Time moves slowly on Tachometer time!
  • Communication: Join OUR Slack Community - It can be used from a web browser but there are also Android and iOS apps. Everyone would appreciate better communication.
  • Finances: We're good. Talk to Jawanza if you'd like to see the books.
  • After scheduled MX activity, remember to use Flight Circle to Dispatch AND Check-In the maintenance period to update the Hobbs & Tach Times and leave any relevant notes. The Dispatch and Check-In actions are the same for going on a flight.
  • Reach out to an Enthusiast and share a flight - helps your pocket and helps them learn. Of course, only CFIs can instruct but any PIC can share (within the limits of the CFRs).
  • Take photos, send me short blurbs for blog posts and help me promote what we have. I can't promote us as the best new flight club in the area (along with the perks that might come with that) if I can't reasonably show what we're doing to better the state of G.A. in GA. Possible well-wishing investors and airplane lessors are looking.
  • Send me your ideas for cost savings.
    • Owning an airplane isn't cheap but you already knew that hence, we share. Submit your ideas for how we can cut costs without impacting our stellar MX practices.
  • Call the Signature FBO to get help with the tie-down or refueling after flights - ensure they have your personal payment method on file for refueling.
  • Email me if you've got something to add to the newsletters. Garage sales? Fly ins? Safety Tips? Best burger you've ever had?
As always, thanks for all you do and let us know if there's anything we can do to keep you flying.
In addition to my laser cutter, I now operate an X-Carve CNC Router. Let me know if there's anything I can do to support your projects and airplane builds!
Please remember why we exist - to share our passion and advocate for general aviation in a safe, cost effective way. This attitude is crucial to our success as a club - one being unofficially modeled to show local industries that employee lead flying clubs are worthy of their support (moral, financial, real estate, fuel, etc...). We will benefit greatly if we conduct our business appropriately.
