Sawmilling South Africa News
So it’s the end of another month and a step closer to another year end, can you believe it? We sincerely hope that all you up country sawmillers and timber growers have got through the worst of the fire season without too much damage and that the run up to the year end will bring better days in the sales department.

As far as things in the area of industrial relations are concerned, we have just heard that those involved with the bargaining council were pleased to hear that labor has asked the unions to accept the 6% offered by employers and so we hope that this will take out the indecision of the past few months and that sawmills can now get on with production as usual.

Good news from the Western and Southern Cape is that for the first time in many years the forestry sector finally, in the form of Dr Jaap Steenkamp, Mr. Braam du Preez and Roy Southey got the opportunity to address the new Deputy Minister of Environment Forestry and Fisheries (DEFF) last week and made her aware of the critical situation that has been developing firstly as a result of the fires and secondly the confusion and frustration with regards the exit and V-con areas in the provinces. Let’s hope that we see some action from central Government in this regard soon.

News from the market is still not great but following a visit to many of the mills in KZN this week it would appear as though there is some light at the end of the tunnel, at least for that area and especially for timber of superior quality.

Sad news to hit us this month was the premature passing of a old colleague and stalwart in the Sawmilling industry Faan Struweg. Faan will be remembered for his pioneering work at HM on kiln control systems that started the move of the industry towards computer controlled kilns. Our condolences and prayers go out to the family as they try to come to grips with their loss.

On a happier note, we need to give our admiration to the folks at Limpopo Lumber for their pioneering work on Eucalyptus structural lumber and we encourage you all to find out more about this dynamic husband and wife team whose mill is situated at Politsi just outside Tzaneen.

Then as far as our challenge to the department of environmental affairs is concerned we have nothing more to add to last months report as we are still waiting for the state attorney to lodge his replying affidavit with the Gauteng high court before we can take the next step.

So I guess that is about all for now so until next month please keep cutting straight and drying flat.
