October is here and among many news, Dublin Cycling Campaign would like to invite members with an interest in the Love 30 Campaign to attend a conference in London at the end of October so check the article below for details!
If you live, work, study, or simply cycle pass through the South Dublin County area, there will be a sub-group meeting in Tallaght and Lucan Libraries in November (details also below) and you will also be able to hear about the ongoing plans for BusConnects and school cycle buses in the area on our next Public Meeting.
Dublin Cycling Campaign and Cyclist.ie have been delivering talks on safe cycle for companies so if you would like to see that taking place in your company, give us a shout!

Cycle Safety Talks for Companies
Over the last month, Dublin Cycling Campaign / Cyclist.ie has delivered three cycle safety talks to companies / organisations seeking expert advice for their employees on how to safely navigate the urban environment by bicycle.
We were delighted to respond to invitations from the National Gallery of Ireland, Davy and Bearing Point to deliver these lunchtime talks.

On Saturday 5th October last, Cyclist.ie held a really well attended meeting of its network of groups from around the Country, as well as Dublin, with 14 of our (22 or so) member groups represented in The Tailors’ Hall in Dublin. It was terrific to meet up with so many of our active members, many of whom we are in regular electronic contact, but do not see in person often enough! Many thanks to our members who travelled from as far as Clonakilty, Cork, West Limerick, Kilkenny, Galway and Sligo! You will see them in the photo above.
It is heartening to see Cyclist.ie strengthening as a network of cycling advocacy groups, encompassing urban and rural campaigning bodies, greenway groups, festivals and other special focus groups (such as Love 30, Cycling Without Age, and Women on Wheels). It is really important that we strengthen our national voice, particularly at this time of major political and social change. We now have a newly refreshed and very talented Executive Committee comprising representatives from Clonakilty, Galway, as well as existing representatives from Dublin, Cork, Limerick, Maynooth Sligo and Skerries.
Of necessity we do a lot of our collaborative work online, and we have recently made major submissions on Budget 2020, and the actual level of cycling funding - check out our website www.cyclist.ie! Our major task over the coming year will be to monitor and chase the Government to honour its promise made in the Climate Action Plan of committing 10% of the Land Transport budget to cycling. We will soon be sitting down with officials from the Department of Transport to query them on a range of issues, including funding and legislation. This is only one of the many national agencies we engage with.

Bicycle art and activism at Electric Picnic 2019
The humble bicycle? A powerful revolutionary tool for climate action. How the bicycle transforms people and places. Our freedom machines. We were a crew of ten volunteers this year cyclist advocates and artists from around the Country.
We had lots of interest in our stall and display and a good number signed up for more information on the campaign. We had a penny-farthing and a unicycle which attracted many to try out. On the Sunday, coordinator Donna Cooney facilitated a discussion on the bicycle as a powerful revolutionary tool for climate action. We joined the extinction rebellion on our bicycles, cargo bike, unicycle and penny-farthing with banners in the first global green parade through the Electric Picnic site. It was the highlight of the weekend and we got a great response from the crowds many who joined in along the route. Chanting 'Our futures our lives, our right to survive'

October Public Meeting
South Dublin County sub-group
Our public meeting on Monday 14th October will focus on South Dublin County local authority area, which stretches from Lucan to Kippure Mountain, from the Dodder to the Liffey and places in between like Walkinstown, Templeogue, Rathfarnham, Knocklyon, Firhouse, Tallaght, Clondalkin, Palmerstown, Newcastle, Rathcoole and Saggart.
Our new South Dublin County sub-group will be setting out their plans for cycle advocacy in the County and you’ll hear about plans for BusConnects and school cycle buses within the County area. Come meet us from 6.30pm at the Central Hotel on Exchequer Street, Dublin 2.

Dublin Cycling Campaign is setting up a new sub-group in South Dublin County, following the successful launch of our Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown sub-group last year. We’ll be holding public meetings in Tallaght Library on Tuesday 12th November at 6.30 pm and in Lucan Library on 26th November at 6.30 pm. Please come along to one or both meetings if you live, work, or cycle in South Dublin County or if you care about cycle routes like the Grand Canal Cycleway and the Dodder Greenway.

Dublin Cycling Campaign New Officers Welcomed!
Dublin Cycling Campaign held its Annual General Meeting (AGM) on 21st September 2019 at Tailors Hall. There were lively debates about our achievements and future, focusing on funding, gender, relationships with our sister organisation cyclist.ie, and more. Thanks to everyone who completed the survey sent out to members in September, it provided plenty of things to consider for the discussions at the AGM and into the future.
The AGM included break-out sessions which allowed new and existing members to come together to brainstorm a range of issues which will help the campaigns that are already underway. We also discussed a range of motions from the website to representation in the campaign. Lots of news to come.
We said a sad goodbye to Dimi Kirova (Vice-Chair), Paul Corcoran (Chair) and Colm Ryder (long-suffering Secretary) who are all stepping back from their roles. Kevin Baker has stepped into the Chair's role, with Louise Williams taking on the Vice-Chair, and Vinnie Meyler as Secretary. We welcomed Ellen Cullen as Membership Coordinator and Suzanne Lindsay as Events Coordinator – both great advocates for cycling in Dublin.

Budget 2020
Cyclist.ie had great hopes for a significant percentage increase in cycle funding in Budget 2020. From the beginning of the year, it was clear that a consensus was emerging that at least 10% of the transport budget should be spent on cycling. January saw a successful Fianna Fáil - Green Party motion to this effect. In March, the Report by the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action endorsed this approach. In May, Dáil Éireann declared a Climate Emergency and in June the government published its long-awaited Climate Action Plan which again referred to a figure of 10% allocation to cycling. The proposed Land Transport Capital Budget for 2020 is €1,940 million so 10% of that would be €194 million.
The few figures in the budget statement by the Minister for Finance on Tuesday and in a more detailed press release by Minister Ross on Wednesday are not easy to disentangle since they conflate various different schemes such as greenways shared with walkers and don't clarify whether they are referring to annual or multi-year spends but we assure our readers that they don't amount to 10%. As to what we are going to do about it, we shall be responding to Minister Ross as a matter of urgency so all we can say for now is watch this space! |
