Dear Ones,

Let’s Talk Sunday School!

First, let me say once again how thrilled we are to announce the Lizzie Polk has joined our staff as the new Saint David’s Youth & Family Missioner.  Welcome, Lizzie!  Lizzie is working hard to make sure that our classrooms, teachers and curriculum are all ready to go for this coming Sunday.

As we continue to grow and attract more families with young children, the vestry and staff are mindful that we need to put more of our time, talent and budget into building out formation opportunities for our children and youth.  To that end, this year’s Sunday School will look a little different than past years.

Schedule: 9:45 Children’s Chapel.  We begin fifteen minutes earlier this year so that our clergy get to worship with families before the main service and we get the following full 30-40 minutes for classroom time.  All young people and their loved ones are welcome to join in Children’s Chapel at 9:45 am in the Parish House!

Classes: Two Sunday School classes plus Middle School Youth Group.  Every Sunday morning there will be two classes for Pre K-2nd grade and 3rd -5th grade, as well as a Middle School Youth Group that will meet once a month on Sunday afternoon.

Curriculum: Sparkhouse Curriculum.  We have purchased age-appropriate curriculum for each of our three classes and will be looking to add a nursery component in the near future.  These are lessons built for fun and building strong faith and love of God and all of God’s creation!

  • Pre K-2nd: Spark – Classroom. Our youngest members will explore key biblical stories over two years.
  • 3rd-5thSpark – Lectionary.  Elementary aged youth will engage scripture through a three year curriculum based on our lectionary.
  • Middle School: Connect.  Our pre-teens and tweens will engage God, Bible, humor and the world through this quirky and solid curriculum.
We are nowhere near done in building out and building up our Sunday formation offerings for our children, but we are well on our way!  I hope that you will all consider dropping by and seeing us in action on Sunday mornings, inviting friends, neighbors and grandchildren to join us and that you will pray about what gifts to you might have to offer our young people through teaching, music, story time, worship or anything else the Holy Spirit may be calling you to share.

With Love and Gratitude,

Kristen

Loaves and Fishes. Want to directly help feed the hungry and learn more about hunger and homelessness in our community? Join us on Saturday, November 2, from 9 am until about 1 pm, to be an active disciple of Jesus in preparing and serving hot meals to the poor at the Church of St. Stephen and the Incarnation.  We are joining a dozen other churches that periodically volunteer to serve the poor in this program, called, aptly, “Loaves and Fishes.”  We are excited, and more details will be forthcoming as we move forward. But know that all are welcome to help, including younger children, as long as a parent supervises them. Mark your calendar, and if you have questions, please contact Deacon Harvey Bale (Harvey@stdavidsdc.org; 202-500-7278).  If you would like to join us on November 2 please email Joel at  joel@stdavidsdc.org. We do need to let Loaves and Fishes know in advance how many Saint David’s volunteers will participate.

20% for 2020! Stewardship Update
Last Sunday our pledge campaign officially kicked-off with a festive coffee hour and pledge packet mailing. On Thursday we celebrated all that Saint David’s has to offer at a cocktail party hosted at the home of longtime parishioner Betsy Nottingham.  As of today we have received 13 pledge cards, totaling $98,000. Many of these pledges have increased by 15%, 20 %, 25% and 2 pledges have increased 100%! Every pledge helps us carry out the work God has called us to do here at Saint David’s. Consider pledging today so that we can begin budgeting for what is sure to be a stellar year in 2020. Pledge cards are available at both entrances to the church, outside the parish office, and online at www.stdavidsdc.org/20-for-2020. Questions? Contact us at 202-966-2093 or joel@stdavidsdc.org. Many thanks for your generosity to the life and ministry of Saint David’s!
Update on the Undercroft and Water Remediation: So much has been happening since the "great flood" in July.  Most of the work has been quiet and hard to see: emptying the space and removing all of the water damaged flooring, walls, etc, readying the parish hall to temporary house our nursery, sunday school rooms and coffee hours (emptied, painted, carpets removed, new roof on the sunroom and refitted for classrooms), multiple bids collected for the water remediation work needed and a two-month study of water flow, drainage, sump pump capabilities and past work and findings all to help us get to the present.  With a much clearer understanding of our situation, we are now in the process of engaging a water remediation company and hope to start work this fall on a multi-faceted "fix" to keep water out of the building! We will continue to update you on a regular basis. If you have any questions, in the meantime, please contact our Parish Administrator, Joel Wood. We appreciate all of your support. ~ The Building & Grounds Vestry Working Group.
