AMERICANO 750ML

$45 (10% off = $40.50)

An Americano is a traditional bitter apéritif from Piemonte. A play on the French amér, or bitter, it is similar to a Vermouth, but usually contains extra bitter components. Mauro’s is based on Grignolino from his niece-in-law, Nadia at Cascina Tavijn. This is blended with raw alcohol steeped in sugar, wormwood, savoury, orange skin, gentiana root and a host of dry Italian pantry herbs. A cult classic. (ONLY 12 BOTTLES AVAILABLE!)

NEBBIOLO CHINATO 500ML

$50 (10% off = $45.00)

Chinato is perhaps Piemonte’s most famous digestif. Traditionally made with aged Barolo, it takes its name from the bark of quinine (or “China”) tree, which is the chief botanical here. Vergano prefers to use a younger wine from Barbaresco, the tannins not as firm, the perfume a little more lifted. The china bark lends the wine tea-like tannins, while herbs and spices like cinnamon, cloves, cardamom, coriander, bay, ginseng and rhubarb provide warmth and real interest. There is no better way to end a meal. (ONLY 12 BOTTLES AVAILABLE!)

MAURO VERGANO'S CHINATI & VERMOUTH

Mauro Vergano worked for many years as a chemist for one of Italy’s top pharmaceutical companies, developing flavours and aromas. A lover of all things booze and beverage, he has long crafted little culinary experiments from home for friends and family to enjoy and, behind an unassuming door in the town of picturesque medieval village of Asti, he now makes tiny quantities of his now cult-status Vermouth, Chinati and other vinous and booze-based treasures.

These bottles are likely best referred to as vini aromatizzati, wines that have had various aromatic ingredients added to them. Mauro begins with base wines full of healthy fruit. Fresh, clean, balanced wines that provide the perfect jump-off point for the flavour juggling that ensues. Mauro will add to the base wine some sugar, raw alcohol and any combination of citrus, quinine, wormwood and other botanicals.

As is plainly obvious by this small list of ingredients, in the wrong hands this could go horribly wrong. However, Mauro must be something of a genius as each and every one of his creations displays astonishing balance and length. Whether you're new to these glorious little unicorns, or a perfectly crafted Negroni is your idea of heaven, then these are things worth snagging for all of the 5 minutes they will last on our shelves.

'LULI' MOSCATO CHINATO 500ML

$50 (10% off = $45.00)

Mauro is the only person who makes a white Chinato, based on Moscato d’Asti. Like all Chinato, the dominant ingredient here is bark from quinine trees, though there is plenty of lemon, vanilla, cloves and cinnamon in the mix. Mauro suggests a glass of this with some torrone, or nougat, ideally from his friends the Barberos just a short walk from his laboratory. (ONLY 12 BOTTLES AVAILABLE!)

Vermouth was first produced in 1786 in Torino, its name coming from the principal ingredient wormwood, or wermut as the Germans would say. Mauro’s base wine consists of Cortese and Moscato from local producers, the former offering brightness and acid, the latter aromatics. These wines are blended with a mixture of raw alcohol, wormwood, citrus skin and herbs like thyme, marjoram, basil and oregano. In the hands of Mauro, we get an unusually detailed, delicate white Vermouth, the best we have tried. (ONLY 12 BOTTLES AVAILABLE!)

SF Importer Tasting: Fattoria San Lorenzo (Marche)
Friday, October 11th: 6-8pm
SAN FRANCISCO

$15 TASTING FEE (waived for Wine Club members)
Tasting with Natalino Crognaletti is never a speedy affair; he is a man big on laughs, big on personality, and big on opinions when it comes to wine. Together with his mother, Natalino is now the third generation to oversee the Fattoria San Lorenzo property, passed down to him by his father Gino, and before that, his grandfather Enrico. Under Natalino’s guidance, San Lorenzo has not only established itself as the standard-bearer for the oft-overlooked Marche region, but has almost single-handedly thrust the Verdicchio grape back into discussions of Italy’s truly great white grapes. John Bigelow of importer Indie Wines will be here to sling and speak to a line up of Natalino's bottles. 5 wines.

SF Importer Tasting: Andrea Occhipinti (Lazio) & Ancarani (Emilia Romagna)
Friday, October 18th: 6-8pm
SAN FRANCISCO

$15 TASTING FEE (waived for Wine Club members)
A Friday night double header with wines from two producers that share nothing in the way of geography and terroir, but plenty when it comes to their ethos toward farming and wine. While no relation to Arianna, Andrea Occhipinti plies his trade on the shores of Lazio's Lago Bolseno with an equally low-interventionist attitude, focusing his efforts on producing killer expressions of local oddballs in Aleatico and Grechetto. To the north, and on the Romagna side of Emilia Romagna, Claudio Ancarani his too built himself a reputation around the revival of a handful of local rarities. In most cases Claudio has been led to what are thought to be some of the last remaining plantings on the planet of the varietals he now champions (Famoso, Albanna, Centesemino) and today turns out super fresh and distinctive wines that will make you very, very glad that he went to all that trouble. 5 wines.

SF Winemaker Tasting: Ronchi di Cialla (Friuli)
Friday, October 25: 6-8pm
SAN FRANCISCO

$15 TASTING FEE (waived for Wine Club members)

The tale of Friuli's rarely seen red varietals is one that seems all too familiar to lovers of obscure Italian grapes - driven to the brink of extinction through the constant onslaught of disease, as well as the ravages of two world wars in the region, many of the region's red varetals seemed destined to the annals of history. Enter Dina and Paolo Rapuzzi, a couple fiercely determined to revive many of their homeland’s now forgotten varietals. In fact, the founding of their Ronchi di Cialla estate was based almost solely on the discovery and identification of the last known remaining vines of Schioppettino (around 50 plants.) Today, the couple and their children have become bastions for a movement that has seen an ever increasing amount of local producers turn their hand to creating wines that place their native treasures back in their rightful spotlight. Dina and Paolo's son, Ivan Rapuzzi, now the spearhead of the estate, will be speak to a cracking line up of classic Friulian beauties! 5 wines.
