What's coming for ECE in 2020?

Brand new in 2020 for ECE we have two interactive storytelling sessions.

Is this the way home? follows the journey of Kereama the kākā who has grown too big for his nest and now must venture out to find a new place to live. During the session, tamariki will begin to understand that New Zealand birds nest and reproduce in different habitats and that they face threats due to the presence of introduced mammals.

Creating ZEALANDIA, the second new storytelling session, takes tamariki on a journey to uncover how ZEALANDIA came to be. Groups will discover the valley, help construct the fence and release species into a new safe haven.

What's coming for schools in 2020?

Please don't feed the kākā and a new Sleepover experience are coming in 2020.

Please don't feed the kākā aims to get your students involved in the solution! This session presents students with a real-world situation and challenges them to come up with a campaign to help prevent an undesired public behaviour – feeding kākā!. Pitched for levels 4 & 5 and aligned to the Social Studies and English curriculum, this session puts your students firmly in the driving seat.

2020's Sleepovers at the Sanctuary will provide not only the chance to experience the valley during dusk and dawn, but also the opportunity to get hands-on. Exploring birds and beaks, teeth and tech, participants will take part in fun, hands-on activities and learn what makes animals survive and thrive.

What's been happening at ZEALANDIA?

Recently, you may have heard the return of a distinctive bird call — repeated ascending whistles followed by a descending whistle — that has been absent from Wellington for the last few months. The Pīpīwharauroa or Shining Cuckoo has returned for the summer. Listen to its call here.

Pīpīwharauroa are migrants to New Zealand and their return is a sign of the coming spring. The question ‘I hea koe i te tangi o te pīpīwharauroa?’  - ‘where were you when the shining cuckoo called?’ is a reference to the bird’s call signalling the time for all to help with planting.
The ZEALANDIA Botanical Trail was unveiled during Te Wiki o te Reo Māori in September.
You can explore the bilingual trail as part of your education self-guided visit to discover some of our taonga/treasures - our most special and unique plants.
Bring your group to ZEALANDIA and head into the valley as part of  self-guided visit. Bookings can be made by contacting education@visitzealandia.com
